Red-bellied Woodpecker Melanerpes carolinus

Where are the girls! "Is it suet I'm looking for or that little girl that was here yesterday?"

Here is the male counterpart to the girl shown yesterday, and I happened to get the whole bird shown for a change. But, it is a horizontal orientation instead of vertical...;-( I like this picture because it shows the signature patch of red on the birds belly which is a rare site in the field. I hope you will like it too...;-)

A common woodpecker over much of the South, the Red-bellied is scarcer farther north but has expanded its breeding range northward in recent decades. Like most woodpeckers, it is beneficial, consuming large numbers of wood-boring beetles as well as grasshoppers, ants, and other insect pests. It also feeds on acorns, beechnuts, and wild fruits. It is one of the woodpeckers that habitually stores food.

description 10" (25 cm). Barred black and white above; pale buff below and on face; sexes similar except that male has red crown and nape, female red nape only. Reddish patch on lower abdomen is seldom visible in the field.

Hi Dave,
Superb capture in great surroundings. The colors, details and composition are all great, thanks for the great work Dave.

Hi David,
Good the side POV to get this capture of the woodpecker!
I like the most the compostiion builded here, with the snow ball over the branch at the background, nicely blurred, and the rich texture of the trunk's bark.
You managed very good the exposition with the available illumination there.
Congratulations, thanks for share and my best regards,
Jm

Hello David,
I don't know why I guess this wink was addressed to me ;) Hey, I like to see the whole bird in this very good POV, composition with nice details. I like this classical pose of the bird and I think that this pine tree is a beautiful element especially with snow on it. Well done!

Hola David.- Bella la pose de este hermoso "Pajaro Carpintero". Su fondo luce exelentemente con las hojas del pino y los copos de nieve sobre ellas. Saludos Luis52.

Hi Dave,
a most excellent picture of this bird,he is a beaut. The POV is right on the money and his colour is very good. Bob

Hi Dave,
Good colors, detail, and an interesting POV.
I might've composed the shot differently with a few less distractions, but you're the artist :) A bit more DOF would improve this one also..
Well done mf.

This is another beauty David. I love the softness of the image and the composition you chose. I do think that the framing in this case feels a little tight. I think maybe an external frame might be more effective unless there was some more image that you may have cropped off.

Hi Dave,
Nice full body shot on this little beauty. I really like the touch of snow in the pine. I can say that as I write this from a beach bar where it is 82 degrees and sunny. Man this umbrella rum drinks are good! Nice shot my friend!

What I like about this is how well it shows all the disinctive features of this species - the red head, the pale red belly (strange how this gives it its name!) and the wing feathers. Very good view indeed.

David, great pose indeed.

Maybe, sharpness could be a little bit better.

I like composition and colors a lot.

Hello Dave
This a lovely natural shot..its a great pov you have captured..perhaps he is a little soft on focus on the head but this in no way detracts from a superb picture. the colours are superb.
Superb note and TFS
