A LIFER for me, first time EVER seeing one in the wild and to say I was stoked is an understatement!!! Now I am checking and this may be THE FIRST one on TREK!! :)

He was a good 100 ft away deep in the brush.

This Night Heron, unlike the White Crowned has YELLOW eyes and a red iris. Hard to see here but its the real deal!!

Cream-colored stripe on crown, thinner stripe below eye on black faceLong yellow legsRed irisSlaty blue-gray body with "shaggy" feathers on back and wings.

This particular shared photo had a branch and dragonfly, not in focus right in front of his beak. Really taking time to edit the way George taught me a few months back, with a clone tool. IT WORKS and looking more natural. What I did was "erase" the area and then stamped in background flora where the intrusion was. I will post the original in Workshop for you to see.

Hello Brenda,
Fantastic and congratulations with this first on TN. Amazing that you could use that combination of shutter speed and focal length and get such a good result at 2000 ISO, enabling you to hand-hold. Well done.

Hello Brenda,
Your 400MM lens really did a fine job for you on this little beauty. The heron looks like he was just a few feet away when you took the shot. You also did a great job of removing the branch and OOF dragonfly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you in hopes that this will be a first!!

Perfect portrait of this rarely seen Night Heron, Brenda.
I particularly like the yellow eye with a tiny catch-light on the black pupil.
Thanks for sharing this great image.
