|Early morning reflections on the C&O Canal. I had hoped to catch an early heron or cormorant, but maybe it was too cold and windy on the Potomac River for them today ...|
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was built as a link to the sea alongside the often impassable Potomac River (see my view of the rapids at Rapids on the Potomac ) from the Ohio region using barges. No sooner was it completed that the railroad from the same region made it essentially unnecessary. Till a few years ago, it was used for excursions using a horse-drawn canal boat, but huge floods a few years ago on the Potomac destroyed part of the canal and it is only slowly being restored.

cool! I to search hard to find out what had to be seen in this picture. After checking the title of this picture I understood!
