New York Ironweed Vernonia noveboracensis
Family: Aster (Asteraceae)

I took this photo yesterday while walking through an overgrown field on a hillside near my house. This is one of several varieties that I found that I had never seen before. The plant stands about waist high. The flowers are rather small, being about the size of the tip of your thumb.

I understand that the plant does well in acidic soil. Seeds can be collected from dried flower heads. Seeds can be directly sown in the fall.
