[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I found this newly emerged Cicada late one evening clinging to a tomato stake that I had driven into the soil just hours earlier.

This was a bumper year for cicadas to emerge from their nymph stage after a long period of living underground (sometimes many years). I watched this particular fellow emerge from it's exoskeleton until it completely unfolded it's crinkled wings. From start to finish it took about 37 minutes.

The bulk of a cicadas' life is spent in a nymph stage undergroung. They hatch from eggs which are laid on living trees and then make their way to the ground where they burrow into the soil. They tap into the trees root system and suck sap, usually for several years.

When the time is right they make their way up through the soil usually after dark, and climb almost any vertical object. The shell of the nymph splits just below the back of the head and the newly hatched cicada emerges with wings all crinkled up. It doesn't take long before the wings completely unfold and the exoskeleton begins to slowly change color from a lime green to the adult colors, which varies with each species.

I will post a photo of it just as it started to emerge from it's exoskeleton in the WS.

Hi Ron,
This is a neat picture with the lit up Cicada and the dark background. I saw some of these when I was in Florida last summer. Very ususual bug, I googled it, it may be a 17 year cyle. Cool shot.
