I took this photo of a Pipevine Swallowtail Caterpillar while out in Oklahoma this past summer. This was a new caterpillar to me, so it's unique features and vivid color really captured my attention.

The caterpillar darkens as it grows, eventually becoming black with fleshy, scarlet protuberances. They only feed on plants in the genus Aristolochia (Dutchmans Pipe) as the tiny caterpillars bodies gradually accumulate the powerful toxins found in these plants. Like the Monarch Caterpillars, birds and other prey quickly indentify their color and bad tast with something to be avoided. This is also benificial to other butterflies that mimic the color of the Pipevine such as the female Black Swallowtail, female Spicebush Swallowtail, and the Red-spotted Purple.

I found a neat video on YouTube that shows the entire life cycle of the Pipevine Caterpiller. To view this video click here

Wow Ron, what a beauty! The vivid colour of the caterpillar against the green leaves as backdrop is truly eye-catching. This caterpillar surely has some fascinating features, and it reminds me of one of those rollercoaster contraptions they have at a fair. A really interesting post and video.
