Roseate Skimmer-Immature male*
Orthemis ferruginea

*The immature male Roseate Skimmer is similar to the mature female sans the ovipositor(small triangular shaped appendages for laying eggs near the end of the abdomen)

Thanks to Kevin(undoredo) for the ID

Today this dragonfly followed me all around the yard. It would fly and hover above me, landing near-by when I would stop to take photos of the little frogs. The frogs are everywhere now. There must have been a massive emergence from a hidden pool of water under the birds nest plant. I assume they develop from tadpoles? So late in the season, maybe it is a harbinger of a coming mild winter.

You have a unique and quite different view from your eye to mine. Only a couple others do it...something about the color which makes for an unusual blending of sorts...almost changing the pallet completely. Very nice still capture Jim.

Hello Jim,
This species is one of Orthemis spp. It could be Orthemis discolor (Orange-bellied Skimmer) or Orthemis ferruginea (Roseate Skimmer). Personally, I think it is Orthemis ferruginea (Roseate Skimmer), immature male.
( FYI, your other photo is named, Blue Dasher-male is actually Blue-form female. and another is named Meadowhawk ?...Skimmer ?...??? is Erythrodiplax berenice (Seaside Dragonlet) female. )
I hope it will help you a bit.
TFS and regards,
Kevin
