[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I found this flower on a hike up to Cooper Spur on Mount Hood in an alpine area just before coming out of the timberline. I had never seen them before so had to look them up. They are Showy Jacob's Ladder, (Polemonium pulcherrimum)
There are two varieties in Oregon and Washington.
Variety pulcherrimum is smaller and more compact in size, seldom being more than 20 cm tall. The leaflets are typically less than 1 cm long and 5 mm wide.
Variety calycinum is usually more than 30 cm tall, with fewer but larger leaflets (the larger ones usually more than 1 cm long and 55 mm wide.
I found these at probably around the 6500' level on Mount Hood. |

Hi Lori
It's been some time since I last saw or visited one of you posting and the reverse is also true (chuckle). Hope you are doing well, but seeing you scurried around the mountain tops at 6500' to capture this shot actually convinced me of the fact.
I like your composition and the angled downward POV which ensured that, combined with the shallow DOF, even the stem and all other parts of the flower were OOF and only the flowers itself were within the DOF zone. This resulted in good details on the flower and a BG that is complimentary to the subject. The colours on those lovely little Jacob's Ladders are very natural and as a result to the excellent exposure you managed to attain fine contrasts on the flower petals and other parts.
Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
