I travelled to my home town in North Powder Oregon to drive the areas backroads to see the Antelope and Rattlesnakes and I found this Swainson Hawk nest nestled in a Russian Olive Tree alongside the highway between North Powder and Union. I visited the nest on three different occassions right up to the time of the Eyess' first flight from the nest. Swainson Hawks are notorious to be very territorial and the parents of this youngster proved their behaviour correct. It took me two hours in the early morning of standing across the road next to my truck and being attacked before they would stay with the nest. One of the parents would fly approx. 300 yards down the road and about three hundred feet high and turn back towards me and as it approached would slowly lose elevation and by the time it arrived at my position it would be at head level, all I could do was duck and throw my hat into the air to disrupt its flight pattern, which worked. Both parents leave the nest and hunt for prey, in this part of the country it is Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels primarily.

Hello Steven!
Wonderful capture.I liked POV,framing,DOF and crying baby a lot.TFS...:-)

Hello Steven,
This is a very good shot! It's hard to call the little one a beauty, but no doubt there is beauty in your picture. Despite all these twigs and branches the photo isn't busy. I like the blue sky too. Very interesting note.

The blue sky is amazing, baby birds are so funny, cute and ugly at the same time. I love your story, I can just picture the scene! Well done.

I will probably start getting dive bombed by the Osprey once they have their little ones in the nest, but maybe they will be used to seeing me by then. Your photo is so cute of the little bird. Baby birds I think are some of ugliest creatures, but so ugly they are cute. Good patience you had to get this shot!
