Time is not really on my side these days my friends :(
I’m sorry i missed a lot of your photos and i hope that i’ll get back with more TN soon and go back to writing a decent number of critiques/comments per day. Until then, i’ll leave you with another shot i’ve taken at the Portland Zoo. Unfortunately, i can’t go on any trips to try and photograph something wild this period either. Here the weather is quite bad and cold, and time and money for any trip to far away lands is pretty much out of the question.

The Hooded Vulture, Necrosyrtes monachus, is an Old World vulture in the order Accipitriformes, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is the only member of the genus Necrosyrtes.
Looking a bit like a small Lappet-faced Vulture these are highly successful as a species, in part because they are omnivorous and will scavenge from human settlements.
It breeds in a stick nest in trees (often palms) in much of Africa south of the Sahara, laying one egg. Birds may form loose colonies. The population is mostly resident.

Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals and waste which it finds by soaring over savannah and around human habitation, including waste tips and abattoirs. It often moves in flocks, and is very abundant. In much of its range, there are always several visible soaring in the sky at almost any time during the day.

This vulture is typically unafraid of humans, and frequently gathers around habitation. It is sometimes referred to as the “garbage collector” by locals.

The Hooded Vulture is a typical vulture, with a bald pink head and a greyish “hood”. It has fairly uniform dark brown body plumage. It has broad wings for soaring and short a tail. It is a small species compared to most vultures.

Hi Horia,
I have to admit that this is a really ugly bird! But your picture is amazing , the sharpness and details are great, wonderful colors.
Well done
Lise

Hi Horia,
Great pose/pov of this Vulture.
Fine composition and color.
DOF is a bit shallow for my tastes.
Nice BG.
Richard

Hi Horia,
this is a striking image of this Hooded Vulture
I remember holding one of these at a Garden Centre once when a bird-of-prey show was running. I think I've still got the polaroid shot of me and the bird :)
+++ A great DOF... it looks like the beak-tip is stuck to your lens!
Superbly composed and a great POV.
Nice colours and lighting.
Once again a perfect capture from you :D
--- Nothing what-so-ever...
Great work mate.
Cheers,
Joe

Hi Horia.
I follow for your pictures, taken with Sigma 70-300 with great interest. Using of this lens is too difficult thing than use of Sigma 17-70. First of all about DOF. It is really a bit shallow. But principal key is that DOF is too shallow always at close distance (it is a feature of all tele lenses). The shorter distance the shallower DOF. You must reduce aperture value when you shoot from close distance (or increase the shooting distance when light conditions are bad and then use crop). I think the focus is not exact too because of only the tip of a beak is extremely sharp. You can see I use f/7.1 or f/8 for sparrow shooting. Head of vulture is large I suppose.

Now about other features of the shot. It is amazing. I like the pose, turn of the head and glance of the bird a lot. The level of the blurriness of the feathers and BG are superb as well as the colours of the picture and its composition. All in all I love this shot and your desire to photograph despite the weather and light conditions. My compliments and TFS.
Yours Alexei.

Your notes are always so very complete. The photo information I am finding is a help to me. A good portrait for a casted villain in the cinema world as well as literature..Always a symbolic bird.

Hello . very short of time just got home from work so just saying a great picture well done TFS.
Nick..

Hi Horia,
An excellent profile portrait mf. The POV, comp, color, exposure, and BG couldn't be better.
I did a quick WS, selecting the area around the eye up to the beak joint and applied some sharpening. Since the eye is the focal point of your comp, I thought it might improve the post.
Well done,
Howard

Hi Horia,
I love this kind of close ups!
You caught a lot of details on his incredidible textured skin.
The curved beak its so particular and contributes to balance the composition.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

hello horia,
excellent shot, the limited focus on the head suits the picture,i liked the dof here, the image is sharp with good details, lovely colours,
well done,
tfs & regards

When were you in Portland? I live just south of there. We are not very impressed with the Portland zoo but you managed to get a super angle on this vulture. I love the tilt of the head. It makes a dynamic composition. I wish the eye were just a little bit sharper but then the tip of the beak probably would have been OOF.

Hi Horia,
good god look at that beak! Nature's design with a specific purpose in it's purest form! Your timing here is what makes this a great shot in my opinion. The pose of the Vulture's head lets us see as much detail as possible and the pinkish colour of his skin is great. Very well composed too, good work.
Paul

Hi Horia,
A beautiful portrait of hooded vulture. Nicely captured with excellent details and composition. 5 years back we had plenty of common vultures here in our city but now surprisingly not a single one is visible here. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Horia,
You must be very busy these days.
This is very nice portrait shot of this Hooded Vulture, with excellent details and very nice composition.
Also, lovely natural colours and nice focusing here, well presented with nice exposure!
TFS and best wishes,
Kevin

Hello Horia what a strange bird ! So much details and sharpness. Great exposure and good colors ! Well done, we can almost see you in its eye ! Thanks !

Mario

Hi Horia,
a well composed picture with good pose and POV.
Pretty good sharpness and fine details but maybe the DOF is
a bit shallow. Lovely light and fine lighting.
Well done. my friend.

bonjour horia
laurent

Excellent sideview shot, did some workshop for you just to show the detail on the eye hope you dont mind...
Well done...
Cecilia

Hi Horia, great portrait of volture with splendid colors, excellent details and good sharpness, very well done, have a nice week end, ciao Silvio

Well focused with very good DOF.
The eye contact is super with god catch light.
Exceptional plumage colour and detail.
Nicely cropped and composed.

WOW!
What a magnificent sharp portrait of this curious vulture! I like very much the pose you captured showing the hooked beak and the red throat. I love the excellent details, framing, POV, DOF and marvellous composition.
Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.

Hello Horia,

Hello Horai !
This is not exactly a beautiful bird, but you managed to get a wonderful picture ! Nice details, natural colors, excellent composition and POV, but what I like most is the pose and the expression of the bird - ha has not this sharp look that is so typical to most birds of prey. He rather looks curious. I also like the blurred BG, which makes the bird stand out so nicely. Very well done !
Valerie.
