The Oregon Zoo has a Polar Bear exhibit complete with a huge swimming pool where the bears can roam freely inside or outside. This one chose to take a nap in the early afternoon. I enjoyed his reflection on the pool.
From the Oregon Zoo Website:
Global Warming - The Plight of the Polar Bear
As the ice over the Arctic Ocean thins and shrinks, due in part to climate change, the wild Arctic polar bears that depend on the sea ice for their survival will feel the pinch. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources/Species Survival Commission has recommended that the polar bear be reclassified as a vulnerable species, and has placed it on their Red List. The Red List identifies species facing a high risk of global extinction.
Conservation groups are also urging legislators to classify polar bears as Threatened under the United States Endangered Species Act to further protect the bears from the consequences of global climate change and other threats.
The Oregon Zoo is holding a "Bear Awareness Week" May 10th - 16th this year. It should be fun and educational, perhaps helping out the polar bears plight. |

Good Morning Lori,
Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.
