[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Petrochelidon pyrrhonota (Cliff Swallows and Nests)

The photo was taken up under a highway bridge and it was quite dark. These nest are built of mud with small amounts of vegetation placed within. They have two major parasites that stay in the nest year round (even when the birds migrate south from Oct/Nov to Mar/May. These are swallow bugs (nearly identical to bed bugs) and fleas (Ceratophyllus petrochelidoni). Sometimes the populations of bed bugs and fleas are so large within the nests that they cause exsanguination of the fledglings. The nests of the cliff swallows are characteristic shaped with a small hole to enter and exit.

Hello Mike,
So this is what goes on under those bridges...I guess if you need some shelter you can't beat it!! A neat shot showing these cute little guys just hanging around when there is not much going on. I'm sure they were wondering what in the world you were doing under there, as well as who turned on the lights.
