I took this shot on my fourth visit to Yellowstone. The mixture of wildlife, scenery and volcanic features make this a stunning location. From my experience I would say the best time to visit are May and June - before the crowds of summer, when it can be unbearable. Also, at this time, much of the wildlife has recently come out of hibernation and/or has young and is quite visible. A range of accommodation options can be found by the gates at North and West Yellowstone.

This bear was in the area between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris - close to Obsidian Cliffs. This is quite a good bear area and I have seen them here before.

This is the American Black Bear (Ursus Euarctos Americanus). The mother or sow is watching her cub gambolling in a clearing.

Best tips for bear spotting in Yellowstone? Look on the Park Map for bear areas, but more importantly - look for the bear jams.

If you plan on visiting several parks buy a Golden Eagle Pass, they are valid for a year and give you access to all Parks, National Monuments etc.

I have cropped this image, used levels and cloned some grass off the muzzle.
