[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was the most absurd behaviour I have seen in these birds yet ... the male began tilting over to one side, much like a sinking ship, and then laid himself out flat on the railing. It was midday and the sun was really hot .. so, surely, he was not cold.

I emailed a bird listserv that I belong to and found out that they sun themselves either for VitaminD or to de-ant themselves ... They spread themselves out in slow motion ... wish I had video ..

This guy laid down in front of his lady while she watched him squirm ..

Have posted a workshop which shows her doing the same thing. Scared me the first time I saw, I thought they were dying right in front of my eyes ...

These shots are not techically strong or challenging, but I had to share them .. because they are bizarre ..

Thanks for looking!
Liezel

Hi Liezel,
very strange action photograph. wonderful.colors details and composition great. very nice note. thanks for sharing.
best wishes
Ahmet

Haha that is quite unique! A bit more DOF would have been nice to bring out the BG bird, but I guess that's tougher to come by with a 500mm lens.

A super capture Liezel,
excellent point of view and a good use of depth of field.
Spot on!

Gary

Liezel, I like the shot and the caption. Its funny. The bird is slightly OOF but okay. Ganesh

I added your pic to the theme "sunbath".
I've seen it from chicken too (no pics).
Note: I like the picture of the female even more. This could have been a separate posting.

Hi Liezel,
A really odd behaviour. I'm surprised about it!

That is totally amazing, Liezel.
He is literally prostrating himself.
Very interesting. I wonder what he is doing.
Great capture with beautiful colors and sharp details.
TFS. : )

Hello Liezel,
Fantastic shot rare pose of the bird,
nice colors very sharp well composed, TFS.
best regards/Lawhill

hi liezel,
i have seen some birds drying themselves by spreading their wings. similarly in cold to sun themselves. but they would be standing on their feet and not lying like this. unusual. nice shot. tfs.

Hi Liezel,
Lovely capture, excellent detail colours are beautiful and well framed, Cheers Rick :)

Hi Liezel,
First I am attracted to this photo just for your use of DOF or aperture adjustment. You have isolated the male so well. Your composition of the female watching him makes this one of my favorites.
Best wishes,

Darren

Hi Liezel,
Thanks a lot for sharing your photo, depicting strange behavior. I added your work to my theme "nature's oddities", though probably should expand it to include strange Behaviour.

Your notes are very interesting, thank you.

Greetings from South Africa
