This was taken at Estero Lagoon, just off Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. I had arrived before sunrise to catch the early morning light. Using a monopod, I caught the three different species of birds walking along as they searched for food during the low tide. They are from left to right:

Snowey Egret
Rosette Spoonbill
White Ibis

It was interesting to watch the bottom feeding Ibis and Spoonbill stir up creatures from the mud, and the Egret would catch the creatures that got stirred up to the surface.

This was an extremely difficut expose and required large adjustments in photoshop to correct both over and under exposure due to the extreme tonal ranges. I was happy to get this acceptable photo from the original RAW file.

Una presentación estupenda, con una combinación de colores muy agradable.
Saludos cordiales. Juan Luis.

Hi Scott,
Very good job with this difficult exposure. I think it works well...because the early bird gets the worm right :)
Well composed in the wide frame.
AND the triple reflections with three different species make it six times as nice ;)
Howard

Hi Scott,
What a magnificent moment and how wonderfully captured. The fact that you got three different species in one shot is just stunning. The very soft morning light gave the brids these wonderful warm colors. The reflection of the sun on the water must have helped on the exposure as well. The exposure adjustments are perfect, they look really natural. I am sure you had a blast while taking these photos.
TFS,
Niek

Donna:o)

Scott, this is a masterpiece picture of three different specie of birds together.
What a fantastic use you have made of the early morning light!
Whatever PP work you speak of has only gone to enhance the appeal of this capture manifold.
Hats off to you and thanks for sharing this amazing picture.

Oh Scott....this is gorgeous. You should enter it into some contest. Audubon clubs often have contests. All the elements of the composition are great...the shapes the horizontal ripples...every bird in perfect pose. The soft morning light is super. Getting there early sure paid off. I read a photographer's comment once. He said "a lot of photography is luck. But the harder I work, the luckier I get" So keep up the good work and keep finding your own luck. : )

Evelynn : )

Hi Scott,
An excellent image!
That's something quite difficult for me, to get at time for a sunrise...
So you were awarded with this trio, a beauty and colorful scene on that Lagoon.
I'm curious about the shadow's strips on the birds, are they product of the reflection of the light on the small waves?
Great the wide composition made with the birds and its shadows.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

HI Scott! :)

OH, every time I see your work it just blows me away. You know how much I love these multi shots, they're difficult to come across. This is beautiful, particularly with the Rosette in the center. That gorgeous golden lighting, you did an amazing job with exposure and photoshop. High five on this capture!

Man, I've missed you! Wondering what you have been up to. Nice to be back on again! At least till we take off again in another week.

Hello Scott,
This is a great capture at dawn, though the Floridan morning light must have been quite bright for the camera settings that you used.
Great composition, sharpness and color and marvellous to capture three diffent species of the egret/spoonbill/ibis group.
Excellent work!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Scott,
Sunrise is beautiful, and I always enjoy the great photo opportunities it has to offer, it's just that' getting up' thing trying to disipline ones self, but hey! I'm getting better. Super shot of the threesome variation, the lighting works out wonderfully, I like how the normal shadow of the spoonbill falls onto the ibis and plus the reflection shadow of the spoonbill creates yet another secondary effect. :)

Hi Scott

I am happy to say that the privilege was all mine to give this remarkable posting its 100th point.

I can clearly see the difficulties you had to deal with in capturing this shot, but…you did an outstanding job. Wow, three species in one and all seems to be in perfect harmony. The early morning light worked miracles on the exposure. Not just in the amazing reflections on the water, but also the incredible reflective light on to the birds. The dark BG and the dark water surface enhance the birds and make them stand out from their surroundings. The degree of details you managed to detain is also extraordinary. The contrasts in the plumage really show up well and every bit of feature detail is visible. Finally, I just love the composition and POV. Great stuff MF.

Excellent work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Wow! This is a awesome view of these three water birds and three different birds what are the chances?? To cool. Lovely soft colours in the early morning sun, it really enhances their colourful plumage. The dark water and reflections also help show these gorgeous birds off.
TFS Janice

Hello Scott,

This is a very pleasing image of three different species having breakfast together! A very good idea to be at the scene before sunrise. You took advantage of the best light.

Composition:

I like the composition! The picture is very well balanced by using the reflections in the water as a compositional element. The dark background makes the birds stand out perfectly. Also, their silhouettes don't overlap with each other which makes them even easier to read against the background. The larger empty space in the right side of the picture is a must. Very well done!

Colors:

The morning sunlight rendered excellent colors! Saturation was well adjusted!

Contrast:

The contrast between the birds and the dark background helps isolating them from everything else. I can see good contrast in the subjects too, defining the details in the plumage better.

Exposure:

You proved great skills in exposing this difficult scene. There are no OE or UE areas now. I guess shooting in RAW gave you more freedom in PP.

Focus:

Focusing on the subjects with such a long lens created an image with excellent sharpness in the birds and a great DOF which also added a nice perspective.

It is an outstanding wildlife photo. Well seen and captured. Thanks for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Hi Scott
Simply a superb composition - great timing to capture all three birds with virtually no missing detail. Exposure management is also spot on. Very well done.
Regards,
Greg

Hi Scott,

This must be what they call at the movies "A Triple Bill". Joke aside, you managed to make a beautiful image in spite of the difficult exposure situation. Nice play of light and shadow. Good sharpness and detail. Well done.

Daniel

Hi Scott
