Blacknecked Caterpillar

The Blacknecked Caterpillar is a gragarious feeder, consuming all but leaf petioles. They have a prominent black to reddish neck prothoracic shield directly behind the jet black head capsule. After feeding for up to six weeks the matured caterpillars descend from the trees and enter the ground where they pupate and overwinter. Blacknecked Caterpillar Moths deposit eggs in late June and early July, each egg mass containing approximately 100 eggs. Each mass will hatch simultaneously and the larvae(caterpillar) begin feeding, stripping the host tree of it's leaves. The defoliation happens so late in the season that it usually doesn't harm the tree. There is a very broad range of trees on which the mature Blacknecked Caterpillar Moth will lay her eggs. There is one generation per year.

This Blacknecked Caterpillar has just finished devouring a leaf, leaving only the petiole. Notice the fullness of it's belly.

Hi Jim,
Splendid shot of this caterpillar. Nice colour tones and sharp features with the hairs on its body very distinct and clear. I like the way it is hanging there and it stands out well against the relatively darker BG. Very interesting caterpillar. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Jim,

Outstanding capture of this grasshopper hanging upside down from this branch. Good title - and it is so sharp we see every hair. Wonderful colors and a background that shows it off well.

Now that thar's cute. I'm sorry but it is a cute shot that would have us all laughing if we were sitting round the picnic table watching while we ate some nice Angus Burgers Jim. Your a good eye!

Hi Jim,

Is this a plant in your garden? (-: It's a long-haired eating monster that type caterpillars. But after that i suppose it wil be a beautiful butterfly. A perfect BG. Good POV and very nice colours. Regards and TFS Bob
