I took this photo of the male Checkered White butterfly back in May in a meadow of wildflowers near the lake. That area is now under water due to heavy rain.

Checkered White (Pontia protodice)

Identification: Upperside of male forewing has black checkered pattern on outer half. Female is more heavily patterned, but markings are more brown and diffuse. Hindwing of both male and female white. Underside of male hindwing with pale checkered pattern. Underside of female with yellow-tan markings on hindwing and tip of forewing. Short-day form has underside hindwing veins with heavy gray-green outlines.

Wing span: 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 inches (3.8 - 6.3 cm).

Caterpillar hosts: Plants in the mustard family (Brassicaceae) including cabbage (Brassica oleraceae); and caper family (Capparidaceae) including Rocky Mountain bee-plant (Cleome serrulata).

Adult food: Flower nectar including hedge mustards, composites, and alfalfa.

Habitat: Wide variety of sites including dry weedy areas, vacant lots, fields, pastures, sandy areas, railroad beds, and roads.

Range: Permanent resident in southern United States and northern Mexico; temporary in northern United States and southern Canada. Does not occur in most of New England.

Thanks, John

Hello Ken,
Woow ! Superb close-up for this pretty butterfly.
The "+++" : composition, subject, pose, POV, great sharpness, DOF, soft BG, colors, exposure on the white, useful complementary note...
The "-" : nothing...
Congratulations and thanks for sharing,

The exposure is sure right on. No blow outs on white and the DOF looks great. With that speed setting, I wonder if you were expecting it to fly.

Hello ken,
Nice shot of a Checkered White in a classical pose and position on the flower. This is nice and sharp and well composed against a fine neutral BG. The butterfly looks very white and it's hard to decide whether this is natural or slightly OE, but this does not detract from the quality of the shot.
TFS and best regards, Ivan

Hi Ken,
Really good exposure, colours, details, texture and pose.
A perfect Job!

Hi Ken

Another great butterfly shot captured with amazing details and contrast considering that it was done on ISO400 and with a very shallow DOF. Evidently from the 1/1000 second shutter speed you had ample light to work with so the ISO setting could well have been set to 100 and the aperture size reduced with some spare shutter speed to work with.

The same goes for this shot as with your Orange Sulphur so, since I already addressed a number of aspects in the workshop and the forum dealing with it I am not going to repeat all that stuff again. However, I need to say that you have a well captured image with excellent composition. Once again the butterfly's proboscis is deeply imbedded in the flower and it's obviously having a feast on the flower's nectar. The exposure was very well controlled and you perfectly managed to eliminate any OE on the white underwings. With a little additional PP work this shot could come to its full potential. I hope you like the workshop.

Very well done and TFS.

Great capture, Ken. Excellent detail and sharpness. Good texture on the wings. Nice BG.

I also like Loot's workshop, which made the image pop. Speaking of making images pop, lately, I have been processing and converting my RAW files with DxO. It does an amazing job and allows you to save in different formats and sizes. Give it a try, I'll be curious to know what you think of it. http://www.dxo.com/intl/photo/dxo_optics_pro

Hello Ken,
A very appealing composition, dynamic thanks to the use of lines!
Macro work is first class, great texture in the wings and the white parts are well exposed...
