Rufous is still hanging around chasing everybody off. Adding another feeder has helped-my little ones are finding a safe place to drink and seem to like hanging out in the rose bush. haha

You can see my little friend was sticking his tongue out at me. Hummingbirds do not, as myth tell us, suck nectar through straw-like tongues. Instead they lap it up like a cat would. But their tongue like at 13 licks per second (how long does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? ha ha Remember that commercial?)

The tongue has groves into which the nectar is drawn. The outer part actually has a fringed edge to help with bug catching.

I think my black-chinned hummingbirds have moved on. They weren't here long. They've been replaced by my original guests, the ruby-throats.

I'm trying to record the noises these birds make but can't really get anything to register. I'll be I would need more sensitive equipment than what I'm using now. Oh well...I tried. :)

Nice photo, great DOF, background blank out. Catch in eye, well done.

Hi Angelina...
Nice image...
Well composed.

How wonderful. You were able to get more pictures of your favor. This one is very nicely done in profile. Colors make this tiny creature so glorious. Certainly one of your finest stop action pictures...

This is superb, Angy!
The technical qualities are excellent and the timing and POV are spot-on. The BG and lighting just right. If I had the chance to take a shot of a Rufous hummingbird I couldn't wish for better result than this!

this is definitely your best so far!
I love the clear details in this full profile, both because of the tongue and because we can see how very short those legs really are (all feet, no legs)

WOW!! Excellent photo. You really captured this guy? well. Outstanding color and detail showing beautifully against the BBG. Great exposure and POV. Very well done.

So good Angelina. The feathers at the neck are brilliant. Perfect stoppage with the little wing motion.
This is so close to the one I have in my gallery here, but the golden neck is way more detailed on this one...Bravo.

The side of his throat almost glistens. Is he doing a raspberry at us? :-) Thanks for the info about the tongues. And you mentioned bugs. Do you think they catch mosquitos? We haven't had many lately and I was thinking it was the robber flies. Excellent photo not easily made. Well done.

A nice picture series and all are prove some hard effort from you. Thanks a lot for the pictures.

bonjour angelina
je n'ai maheuresement jamais vu ce genre d'oiseau en vrai, alors merci de le partager avec nous!
tres belle prise avec une bonne netteté et de belles couleurs.

Hello Angelina,
I like how he is frozen in this position, as it is interesting to study cooorination between different body parts mid air!
Fine details and good colours in this nice close-up!

Hi Angelina,
oh wow... looks great. I'm still dreaming about a shot like this. Very few hummers around here and usually only around when my camera is not ;-).
Beautiful capture with wonderful detail.
