First of all I would like to thank each and everyone of you for viewing and ther wonderful comments to my previous uploads. Much appreciated
Secondly I have to apologize for my absence, did'nt write any comments to the beautiful images uploaded by all of you, on TN during the last week.
Just could'nt find the time to do so.
Had a very busy week and still am busy with other things like photo orders from some different persons and companies, but I will try to catch up as soon as possible.
Nikon did introduce there new D3 and D300 cameras and I had to decide what to do.
While the D3 is a full frame camera at wich I did'nt wait for as a nature and sports photographer and the D300 has the DX censor, I did decide to order the D300 and sold my D200 with MB200 Power Grip.

This is an older image of a Bald Eagle wich I shot in November 2004.
Right after my trip to Churchill in Canada, Polar Bear Capital of the World, I did travel from Churchill to Haines in Alaska.
Near Haines is Chilkat River and there is the biggest gathering of Bald Eagles, around 6000 every winter, of the world.

The Eagle you see here did walk in to the water of Chilkat River wich did deliver a nice reflection.

I did scan the Fuji Provia 100F slide with a Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ED

Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve:

The Preserve

The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve was created by the State of Alaska in June of 1982. The preserve was established to protect and perpetuate the world’s largest concentration of Bald Eagles and their critical habitat. It also sustains and protects the natural salmon runs and allows for traditional uses provided such uses do not adversely affect preserve resources. The Preserve consists of 48,000 acres of river bottom land of the Chilkat, Kleheni, and Tsirku Rivers. The boundaries were designated to include only areas important to eagle habitation. Virtually every portion of the preserve is used by eagles at some time during the year.

Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve The river "flats" of the Chilkat River along the Haines Highway between miles 18 and 24 are the main viewing area for eagle watchers and considered critical habitat in the preserve. Bald eagles are attracted to the area by the availability of spawned-out salmon and open waters in late fall and winter.

The natural phenomena responsible for five miles of open water on the Chilkat River during freezing months is called an "alluvial fan reservoir". The Tsirku fan, which is a fan-shaped accumulation of gravel, rock, sand, and glacial debris, at the confluence of the Tsirku, Kleheni, and Chilkat Rivers acts as a large water reservoir.

During the warmer spring, summer and early fall seasons, water from snow and melted glacial ice flows into the alluvial fan. The fan receives water faster than it can flow out, creating a huge reservoir of water. When winter arrives, cold weather sets in and surrounding waters freeze. However, water in this large reservoir remains form 10 to 20 degrees (F) above surrounding water temperatures. This warmer water "percolates" into the Chilkat River and keeps it from freezing.

Five species of salmon spawn in these and other nearby streams and tributaries. The salmon runs begin in the summer and continue on through late fall or early winter. The salmon die shortly after spawning and it is their carcasses which provide large quantities of food for the eagles. This combination of open water and large amounts of food bring large concentrations of eagles into the Chilkat Valley beginning by early October and lasting through February.

Thanks in advance for viewing and comments.

Have a nice day.

Hi Harry,
interesting picture here for more than one reason. First of all I think it's a high quality image of the bald eagle. We nearly get used to your level of photography, it is by far not so obvious as it seems.
Then..I see just a few concentric circles in front of the bird which hence provides the good reflection in the water. He (or she) must be walking upstream. Last, I wonder why the movement of the wings which are visible from the bird, seem absent in the reflection.
But most of all another terrific picture
Regards, Jacob

Hi Harry,
i must've been quite a sight to see so many of these magnificant birds en masse like that. Great timing as usual with a well planned composition. The colour of the water is just beautiful, very well done. Your work is of such a high standard.

Hello Harry,
What a perfect timing. Fantastic light and focus on the head of the bird. The reflection is wonderful, in some places almost sharper than the bird himself. I love the POV and composition.

Hello Harry,
This shot makes a nice pattern, the Bald-headed Eagle and its reflection combining to create an attractive composition. For a scanned shot this has good technical qualities and the lighting superb.

Amazing picture again! Looks like coming straight out of Greek mythology. A mix of Zeus and Narcissus. You seem to be always at the places where happen special actions. Excellent framing, sharpness.. everything.

Harry Lovely composition and great shot. Ganesh Smiley tomorrow

Hello Harry,

An excellent picture with an appropriate title! From your notes it seems this place is a paradise for wildlife photographers. At least I would have loved to visit it.

This is a great symmetric composition in which you nicely avoided placing the eagle into the middle of the frame. The slightly larger empty space in front of the bird is just enough to create a balanced picture. The wings are nicely blurred and suggest movement.

I love the warm brown hues in the eagle's plumage and the blueish reflection of the sky in the water.

The contrast was distributed very well: higher in the subject and lower in the rest of the picture.

In spite of the difficult subject you exposed both shadows and highlights perfectly even if in full sun. The details in the plumage are wonderful and so are the ripples in the water.

The focus is precise on the eagle rendering sharp details and the DOF was well controlled to add some perspective to the picture.

A pleasant image to look at! The notes are informative and well written. Thank you for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,

Glorious Image. It looks as if he is studying his reflection. Perfect mirror and a great pose, vivid, but soft colors! Perfection! TFS and Cheers, Klaus

Hi Herry.
D300 – it is a cool choice. I wish you the fastest purchasing of the camera.
I also have seen your site. It is cool too. I think this shot is from there. Excellent timing, amazing mirror reflections, impressive lighting (and darks) and cold (I think) colours. Wonderful picture, TFS and best wishes.

It is difficult for me to comment on this picture other than to say thanks for the picture.

hello harry,

good photo, Bravo.. :)

Hi Harry,
I know the feeling of not having enough time for TN. Let alone for TN, TL and my local photoclub (maybe one for you to join as well??). But then it is always great to come back and see wonderful photos like this one. Intersting to read that you went for the D300 and not the D3, it gives good insight on your type of photography. Make me want to go for the Canon 5D even more.
The wonderful pose and the stunning reflection are pefectly captured. I like the idea that he can see the fish and we can't. This time I do like the motion in the wings, since it shows the moment even more.

Hi Harry,
Splendid reflection and framing.

hi harry,

amazing great picture!!what else to say that perfection is represented here!very nice soft colors!

Nice clear reflection. I like the way you kept the full reflection in the frame.
Oh, so I guess it is time to get a D300 now too. They also released some new lenses. Does it ever stop?? $$

Hi Harry
Whoooow....This shot is very nice.... all is very good.

amazing shot
very good moment
nice colours and well focused
great job

Hi Harry,
This is a class picture. Was this published in National geography? The reflection is wonderful and the action that you have managed to get is something that wonders me. This is truly a masterpiece from the master himself.

Hello harry,
Fantastic action shot! The POV and composition are just great. Beautiful light and reflection caught.I wonder which one is sharper, the bird or the reflection?:)
Thanks a lot for sharing this photograph.
p.s. Last week a friend of mine sent me a set of award winning photographs in which i think i saw this very picture. Is that so? Was there any other photo belonging to you among them?

Hello Hary!
The title is so good to this picture that only for it the points are necessary! But of course also the quality of picture is very good (as always!). Not only perfect timing, but also great DOF and POV. The reflection is so natural that it really looks like photo with 2 not only 1 eagle :)
Many thanks for showing this interesting and unique composition!!!

Wow, what a beautiful shot of the eagle! Not easy to take them and you're able to show us his reflection also!
What a great work!
Amazing shot, your waiting and patience pay very well, your pictures are excellent!

Hello Harry. I have countless history of failures with birds and this have been the shot I always wanted to make. I had chances but turned out blurry and low quality. Very well taken shot here and I like everything I see in that frame. Best regards. Jusni

Hello Harry

Amazing shot with super action and reflections.
The POV is awesome.
I love how the shot is divided into the turmoil and action side, and the placid reflection side.
Excellent use of the lighting, the colours are natural.
