Took this shot at a park where there is a swampy body of water and I have been going there to find this little guy since last year. About 2 out of 4 times I will find him. There are some distracting weeds OOF near him but I didn't really want to clone them out.

Green Heron:

The green heron is a bird with many aliases. In various parts of the country it is known as "whitepoke", "chalkline", "fly-up-the-creek" and "green bittern." It is probably the best known of all herons and is often seen around the Colonial area during the warm weather months. In the winter, the awkward and slow-flying bird moves to warmer climates such as Central and South America.

Like the rest of its famiiy, the green heron is an expert fisherman, moving through the shallows in stealthy fashion. Its sword-like bill is like a cocked gun, and the bird hits its prey with the speed of a striking rattlesnake: taking fish, frogs, salamanders, small snakes and insects with ease.

When the bird flushes and flies to a perch, it immediately "freezes" and the on-looker's eye is hard put to tell the bird from a dead branch. This position is held until the intruder approaches to within a few feet.

The back of the green heron is such a dark green that at a distance it appears more like a dark blue or gray. The neck is rufous and the center of the throat white with dark streaks. Dark green head crests are raised momentarily when the bird is alarmed.

Hi Adam, a nice shot of the Heron. You've captured some wonderful colors and it looks like he caught some lunch. Looks very nice against the background. Good lighting. Nice detail. Composition does give it a good feel. Good work, congrats.

Hi Adam, what a super shot of this very colourful Heron. I very much like your composition here and the great detail of the Heron. Wonderful light bringing out those magnificent colours and fine plumage markings. Great focus, exposure and dof.

Hello Adam,
Everything in this photo is very good: details, sharpness, light, colours, BG, composition, etc. But the strong clear colours I like the most.

Very very nice, Adam. : )
I have rarely seen a green heron around our parts.
Did you find him at Coyote Hills?
The different sections in his plumage are well defined with sharp details and rich, natural colors.
Is that his tongue hanging out or is that a small fish?
TFS. : )
