I have put bird food up in my backyard and am amazed at the variety of bird life I am seeing even though it is winter. The lighting on this woodpecker was head on, so I burnt some of her white feathers under her beak. To make the most of it, I under exposed one image, over exposed the same image and super imposed. I also sharpened and changed levels. Increased sat as well.

Here are some details on the Red Bellied Woodpecker:

The Red-bellied Woodpecker, Melanerpes carolinus, is a medium-sized woodpecker of the Picidae family.
Adults are mainly light grey on the face and underparts; they have black and white barred patterns on their back, wings and tail. Adult males have a red cap going from the bill to the nape; females have a red patch on the nape and another above the bill. The reddish tinge on the belly that gives the bird its name is difficult to see in field identification. They are 9 to 10.5 inches long, and have a wingspan of 15 to 18 inches. These birds search out insects on tree trunks. They may also catch insects in flight. They are omnivores, eating insects, fruits, nuts and seeds.
nteresting Red-bellied Woodpecker Facts

Red-bellied woodpeckers "drum" to attract mates. They tap on aluminum roofs, metal guttering, hollow trees and even transformer boxes, in urban environments, to communicate with potential partners. Their sounds can cause dismay to a person who wishes to sleep peacefully at night, but make it easy for birdwatchers to locate specimens.

Hello Liezel
Sharp capture, nice composition and lovely colors
great work

You have exceptional light on the Red Bellied Woodpecker and your colours are wonderful. It is a nice composition overall. It is a rather noisy bird sometimes, but in Falls Church...one can escape. I know the area well, having been station in DC for a few years...but that was long ago....
Good show for Christmas.

Hello Liezel,
Great diagonal composition, sharp details, soft BG and wonderful lighting on this capture. Slight burned spot on the throat, but overall an outstanding image.
