Swallowtails are in the swallowtail family (duh! ha ha) names for the taillike projections on their hind wings. There are two subfamilies: Swallowtails (Papilioninae) and Parnassians: medium sized without tails.

I mean to look up the life cycles of these beauties. We still have another freeze ahead of us but the fields are full of black swallowtails and pipevines. I guess I should built a butterfly sanctuary for the little guys and gals during bad weather. :)

A perfect example captured from a good lateral POV Angelina, the underwing pattern and coloration details are evident in this finely focused macro shot, also of the whole lateral aspect of the b.fly. An altogether fine composition with that multichromatic OOF BG.
TFS and cheers,

Hi Angelina,

Wonderfull shot of the Giant Swallowtail, really nicely composed shot with a great POV, fine pose and lovely backlighting behind the B/Fly, very nice details on the butterfly and the flower it is resting on, I like the OOF BG a lot with the added touch of yellow amongst it.

Hi Angy,

Great shot of this beautiful Swallowtail reaching out to the flower. Colors are wonderful. The wing markings are lovely and shown in good detail. I love the composition. I haven't seen one butterfly here yet.

a very nice catch, the back-light shining through the wings in a lovely way, the exposure are really good.
Well composed, lovely colours and great details.
Well done.

Hi Angelina,
this is a lovely and fine capture of the butterfly.I don't think you really a sanctuary for these little creatures as they can handle cold much more better than we can, they are beautiful and tough.I saw my first butterfly yesterday and overnight it gets well below freezing and yet the butterflies live on.A good clear shot and thanks for sharing it. Bob

You lucky thing! We're freezing in the snow while you're chasing Swallowtails in the sun! I envy you! ;-)

This is a superb shot, Angy!
The butterfly is almost backlit and the warm sunlight is shining through the wings!
Pin-sharp with superb clarity.
Very nice DOF and BG.
Great composition.
Nice work!
Good to see you back as well.

Hello Angelina,
Good lighting in your Swallowtail.
Blurred background through limited focusing is a very effective element in your compo. Lots of space to fly away as well...

Hi Angelina,
Lucky you to see fields full of these and a fine capture this is. Lovely detail and light through the wings. Super pose.
TFS Richard

Lucky you to have such beautiful butterflies now, with spring springing! It's the first time that I take a look at your gallery and you have beautiful pictures in there... and some fantastic ones. I love the colours and the warm sunshine in this one, the beautiful swallowtail swallowtail (!), it is a beautiful insect. Thank you!

Hello Angelina,

just marking,

I agree, we still have another freeze coming. Easter was very early this year. great shot here. I really like the composition and colors of this shot. Great Job.

Hi Angy,
Do you really have these butterflies flying around in March? If so, yes, I do really think you should built a house to protect them...
Greetings from Catalonia!

Hi Angelina,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful swallowtail with such lovely colours and sharp details. You are on your way now and I am getting excited to see such fine posts. The backlighting makes the wings glow and the image is perfectly illuminated. Excellent DOF isolates it from the BG which illustretes the habitat well. Very nicely chosen POV to portray it and a superb composition. Kudos.

Hello Angelina,
Fine macro work makes this beautiful butterfly stand out so well!
Wonderful wing pattern is well reproduced with fine natural colours, I like the composition with inclusion of the flower...
Excellent 3D effect!

Wonderfull capture of the Giant Swallowtail. Shall I say Angel clicked by another Angel.

Dear Angelina,
wonderful clear and well balanced presentation of the glorious Giant Swallowtail at its short stop drinking nectar. Beautiful backlight showing the partial transparency of wings, and a very pleasant airy atmosphere of rich life. Thank you!
My best regards,
