[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
As I was getting ready to relax and enjoy the sunset, I saw movement in the grass over the rise. It was actually the tail of this coyote, so I pursued her (slowly).

She was fully aware she wasn't alone, but then, I stumbled over a stump, said a few words (forgive me, God), regained my balance, and nearly stepped into a burrow of some sort (ground squirrel?).

In the dimming light, I was forced to slow my pace down from that of a turtle to a snail, but she might've felt sorry for me because when she came to a clearing, she stopped.

She did not allow me any closer than this, and I ached to have a camera with a longer optical zoom. Here, a 400 or 500 would have been a blessing. I can tell what she is but beyond that, the details are lost.

However, coytoes don't often want to be seen, they move in shadows, are shy, sly, and creative. From what I've observed, they seem to have an intimate knowledge of those who wish to do them harm and those who are merely curious.

This coyote has a brood near by, and although I heard them, I never did spot them - more than likely the mother threatened to give them a sound lashing if I did.

Still, it was kind of her to stop, and even though I only took a photo or two, I did set my camera down and we regarded each other for several minutes.

It felt as if we had some sort of internal communication going as I repeated that I had no intention of harming her or her family.

Even though this didn't come out as well as I could've hoped, the experience was definitely worth it. I know many people who'd rather shoot a coyote than try to understand or appreciate them and I'm glad this one knew the difference.

Perhaps next time she'll come a bit closer or I'll manage to afford a longer lens.

what a great luck you have to meet and shoot in photo the coyote,
excellent shot with fine POV, DOF and framing,
i love the shadow highlight, shadow highlight of the ground,
and his wonderful eye-contact with you, TFS

I like a lot your coyote and the note about your meeting.
It is not always the perfect shot, sometimes its the meeting with an animal itself which is magic and wonderful.
I wish you to have more of these great experiences and of course to shot more beautiful pictures.

Hello Kathy,
I love your photo, such a magnificent animal and captured very nicely in it's natural surroundings. You were probably fortunate that it stopped in a shaded area, otherwise the full sun might have given you a washed out exposure.
I've only seen a few coyotes here in Ohio, because they are almost totally nocturnal in our area. I would be thrilled to death to be able to get a view of one such as this. TFS.
