Hello all- I'm back again for hopefully more than a couple of posts. Work has cut mercilessly into my time for photography- a terrible thing! However, I did get back to one of my favorite places for an excellent weekend- just enough time floating around in my canoe to keep me from going crazy.

This island is in the same lake and about 200 m from my earlier "Split Island" post (http://www.treknature.com/gallery/photo142993.htm). The gravelly soil anchored by a loose cluster of large granite boulders has accumulated sufficient organic matter to support several trees. Each autumn represents another step in this slow positive feedback loop. Slightly larger leaf drops every year add a bit more organic matter to the soil than in previous years. Perhaps in another few centuries the soil will be rich enough to support a garden for the summer people who seek refuge there.

Small islands like this are fairly common in the roughly two thousand lakes in Maine and play a special role in their local ecology. I've observed this one carefully for more than three decades. Bald eagles and osprey sometimes watch for prey while sitting in the top branches of its three highest trees, all white pines. The partial protection from four-legged predators offered by island life is important to the many songbirds which roost there. The island's gradually expanding beaches and shallows provide a toehold for submerged aquatic vegetation, plus more living space for small invertebrates, amphibians, and small fish.

These changes are an essential part of the slow but inexorable ecological succession I've written about in previous posts, and which are such a fundamental part of Maine's post-glacial landscape.

This picture was shot from a canoe on a quiet Sunday morning shortly after sunrise. Part of the fog had just lifted from the lake, giving me my first clear view of the island. The far shore, nearly one km away, was still shrouded in fog and is dimly visible on either side of the island. The wind came up a within minutes, spoiling my chances for any other reflection pictures.

tech notes- contrast increased significantly, otherwise unmodified

salut bob

tres jolie photo belles couleurs et joli reflet
bravo

Hi Bob, splendid antumnal composition with great waqrm colors and fascinating reflections, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Bob,
What a wonderful photo. The little island is beautifully isolated by the lake and the fog in the BG. I like the fact that on such a small area so many different trees can grow in harmony. The different colors caused by the fall season and the difference in species makes it very interesting to see. The reflection is of course a stunner and ot shows that better weather was comming soon. On a tech part, I think adding a tad more shadows in the top part won't hurt the photo.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Bob, I am very happy to see you're back because you write such interesting notes and your pictures are what you like and feel and it shows. This one is so beautiful, what a return! Who wouldn't dream to live in such an island, let stress and nervousness leave the body while looking and contemplating this natural beauty? Very well captured, I love the pov you chose, the reflection is perfectly a part of the picture, the colours are astounding and the notes are great. Many thanks and welcome back! By the way, I put a picture in the workshop of my last post, where you will see the icicles formed on grass.

Bye bye,

Francine

Hi Bob!

This could b what I would call the paradise on earth. I love it. It's romantic, charming and so pleasantly lonely. The atmosphere your picture creates is peaceful and tender.

Kind regards
