American Coot (Fulica americana)

Here is a picture of a common site in our ponds. The American Coot.

Note:

Coots are fairly aggressive in defense of their eggs and, in combination with their protected nesting habitat, this undoubtedly help reduce losses of eggs and young to all but most determined and effective predators. American crows, black-billed magpies and forster's tern can sometime take eggs. Mammalian predators (including red foxes, coyotes, skunks and raccoons) are able to predate coot nests even more seldomly, though nests are regularly destroyed in usurpation by muskrats. Conversely, the bold behavior of immature and adult coots leads to them falling prey with relative regularity once out of the breeding season. Regular, non-nesting-season predators include great horned owls, northern harriers, bald eagles, golden eagles, american alligators, bobcats, great black-backed and california gulls. In fact, coots may locally comprise more than 80% of the diet of bald eagles

Hello Everton,
A common sight for you but not for me!
A fine capture of an American Coot taken from a great POV with excellent lighting, sharpness and colours in a fine composition with the sky-reflecting water BG.
Thanks and have a good weekend!
Ivan

Hi Everton,

There must be a big difference between Phoenix and Tucson. The only water near me is man made on the golf course and I've only seen an occasional Canadian Goose there. Nice shot of this Coot in the water. I love that orange eye, white beak and black feathers. At least he found a way to keep cool.

Everton,
MAS QUE LINDEZA!!!
Excellent clarity.
All colour contrasts on the bird are so detailed; great imagery work.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!
It was a pity you did not capture a full reflection; but then we are not in control. NATURE is.
Very friendly greetings from Mario, someone who loves Brasil more than life itself.
