[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Russel cave is a U.S. National Monument. It is the site of a long prehistoric habitation, traces of which include etchings on the cave walls called mud glyphs. The river flows into the cave rather than out, and the resulting sedimentary depostion has buried the artifacts left by prehistoric peoples deep beneath the surface. The mud glyphs have survived because the wall material into which they are etched has been kept plastic by moisture. We were not allowed to enter the cave beyond the entrance chambers because of an epidemic affecting bats, called white nose syndrome. They think it may be realted to human activity.
