Who doesn't love viewing a raccoon? Never had a bad encounter tho I hear they can be quite ferocious if they have a brood they need to defend. An adaptable feeder, they will eat almost anything! Fish, mice, insects, stolen eggs, and human trash. They usually "wash" their food, rapidly dunking it in water before eating.

Females have one to seven cubs in early summer. The young often spend the first two months or so of their lives high in a tree hole. Later, mother and children move to the ground when the cubs begin to explore on their own.

Raccoon's in the northern parts of their range gorge themselves in spring and summer to store up body fat. They then spend much of the winter asleep in a den. There are six other species of raccoons, in addition to the familiar northern (North American) raccoon. Most other species live on tropical islands.

On one trek in the wetlands came across this little one foraging near a canal. Also caught other specimens; alligators with their young, Ibis and rabbits to name a few. Yes I wrote a blog about it so please, feel free to check it out and see the habitat of where this mammal was captured. And of course more thoughts and other species displayed.

Again thank you for all your comments! Really look fwd to the responses!!

Hello Brenda,
Great portrait of this Raccoon. Indeed they look like bandids. But these eyes are heartbreaking. Superb sharpness, details and taken from a very good frontal POV. Beautiful natural colours.
Regards,
Peter

Hello Brenda,
What a neat photo of this cute little Raccoon. Love those big dark brown eyes and of coarse the black mask.
As a young boy we seemed to have Raccoons around our home quite frequently. Some became so friendly you could almost consider them as pets. "Note", I said almost!!
You are correct about how ferocious they can be at times, especially a mother when she is protecting her young. I vividly remember one particular mother who had her litter in a friends garage. He needed to retrieve something, but the mother didn't want any part of it.
You wouldn't believe the loud growls and snarls that came out of that determined mother when he tried to move her out of the way. She sounded like a tiny bear with teeth bearing the whole time as she literally made quick charges toward him before retreating back to her babies. He then decided he would leave her be and get what he needed from the garage some other day.
I really like your photo, but the color of the fur seems to be just a tad light. Hope you don't mind, but I wanted to try a WS on it.
Ron

Amazing portrait Brenda! Very good composition, fantastic lighting and impressive sharpness! I prefer the colors of your photo than the colors of the WS!
Regards,
Christodoulos
