[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I found this unique looking Saddleback Caterpillar (Acharia stimulea) feeding on corn plants in our neighbors field. I was actually heading back up to the house after photographing some butterflies when I spotted it on this half eaten leaf.

They are not like ordinary caterpillars in many ways. They actually don't have legs like other caterpillars do, but instead move about like slugs on sucker-like prolegs. They secrete a semi-fluid silk which enables them to travel on smooth surfaces quite easily in a slow gliding motion.

Their body is covered with a number of hollow venom secreted spines which can break away when contact is made, causing a very painful stinging sensation.

The brown saddle like marking on their back is obviously how they got their name. The head is extremely small and hard to see unless they are moving. The rear end has two distinct whitish eye like markings which reminds me of a warriors mask.

I will post some other shots in a WS.

Hallo Ron
What a lovely caterpillar! I have never seen something like this in my life, not with my own eyes, nor in any kind of magazine or book. It is really spectacular, and it looks as if some old granny has knitted it a type of jacket. The details, colours and texture of this caterpillar is captured with excellent preciseness, making it a super macro.
Best regards and thanks for sharing.

Hi Ron,I thought of a dog with a green winter coat watching the miniature...ehehe..fantastic pics showing us this magnificent caterpillar from 2 different points of view. The quality is the best as possible, very bright colors too, curious and interesting post,i like it! Have a nice week and thanks,Luciano

Very strange looking caterpillar. Looks like it is wearing a football jumper. I wonder what the moth/butterfly (?) looks like.

Hello Ron

Between the 2 photos, this one and the one in the WS, I prefer this one,
great macro, with very fine POV, great DOF with the F18 aperture
helping for a great focus, sharpness, details, and contrast, TFS
