[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This Loggerhead Shrike was photographed in the Texas Panhandle on a particularly cold winter day (+20°F/-7°C). He certainly wasn't interested in unfluffing his feathers and flying out of the limited shelter this snowy Yucca provided.

Loggerhead Shrikes are the most widespread north american shrike. They are known colloquially as butcher birds for their habit of catching small lizard and insects and impaling them on spines or barbed wire and coming back to eat them later.

Although they are small and are typically associated with being insect eaters, these miniature predators will readily kill and eat other birds almost as big as themselves - sparrows beware!

Very well composed and lovely shot! Too bad the eye is not visible, but this must have been a very difficult scene to expose well. Well done & TFS!

A very appealing shot, which suffers a bit from looking rather dull and the missing catchlight in the shrike's eye. I've done a quick WS on it to bring the snow back to white and recover the bird's eye. I could have done better with the original.

Very interesting and educational note along with a beautiful picture Chris! Great POV! All of the elements of the picture: barb wire, snow on the Yucca, and of course the bird make this picture a real eye catcher.

This little guy looks quite cold.

I love the lines of the grass and the wire they make a nice composition on their own. The bird just adds that little extra that makes for a wonderful shot.
