[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is taken climbing over Silver Pass on the John Muir Trail. Since the majority of the mountain ranges making up the Sierra Nevade run east-west, and the Muir trail runs north-south, most of the hikers time is climbing up to or down from passes between valleys. As a friend said when he first hiked the trail, "I didn't realize it would always be up or down." Later he came to know the places above timberline, and they became his favorite on the Muir Trail. The best part of these passes are the amazing vistas. The second best part is the sense of accomplishment from getting to the top of them (yes, it is a bit masochistic, I admit).

Notice the ice just breaking up on the lake below. And this was taken in August! (Though this was a fairly heavy snowfall year. Other years I have seen it without snow in mid-July).

The shot is scanned from a 24-year-old negative. Some dust and scratch removal. PP consisted of a color adjustment, sharpening, resizing, and framing.

The next shot is posted here.

What a wonderful view. I must one day wak this trail... It looks wonderful.

I know what you mean about trail walking, I have walked a few (long distance footpaths) in the UK and even here, some of the climbs and continual ups and downs can surprise you at first...
