The Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus, is a very large owl, often found in urban and suburban settings and are a common backyard bird. They often take over a nest used by some other large bird, sometimes adding feathers to line the nest but usually not much more. In the Sonoran desert, they often take over abandoned Red-tailed Hawk nests in the arms of Saguaro cacti.
Their breeding habitat is almost anywhere across North America and parts of South America.
These birds hunt at night by waiting on a high perch and swooping down on prey. They mainly eat mammals such as rats, mice, rabbits and skunks, as well as small birds, including smaller owls. In northern regions, they may let uneaten food freeze and then thaw it out later using their own body heat.

They have excellent hearing and exceptional vision in low light. Compared to humans, owls have a much sharper depth of perception to their hearing. This is possible because owl ears are not placed in the same position on either side of their head: the right ear is typically set higher in the skull and at a slightly different angle. By tilting or turning its head until the sound is the same in each ear, an owl can pinpoint both the direction and the distance to the source of a sound.
Measurements and Weights:
Wingspan: 50 - 60 in. (up to around 1.5 meters, sometimes more)
Length: 18 - 25 in. (up to around 0.60 meters, sometimes more)
Average Weight: around 4.5 lbs when adults (up to 2 kilograms)

Hi Radu,
By the totally spooked look on him, yeah, I would say he thinks you are more than close enough! You really should not do that to innocent little birds. *grin*
A fantastic shot with sharp details and great POV... as in "in-your-face" kind of POV.
The big yellow eyes are fantastic.
TFS. : )

Hi Radu,
Yes very close! Good colours and light, gorgeous portrait but not so sharp as everybody says. (don't say I could do better!)
But of course we are hypnotised by his eyes :)
Well done and TFS

Hi Radu,
Yep, plenty close enough :-) Great tight crop, excellent detail and those eyes, so piercing. Great colour and textures, interesting note too. Great job.

Fantastic closeup of this hooter, kinda reminded me of a song. "I can see for miles and miles..." an excerpt from one of the WHO songs, as in Who-Who-Whoooo!. :)

Hi Radu.

Very nice close-up of this magnificent bird, Radu!
