[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The beetle itself is not any danger to its environment, but its larvae does serious damage to black locust tree.
The adult locust borer resembles a wasp or hornet being black with bright yellow markings. There is a yellow “W” across the wing covers (Elytra). Adults are ca/ 1 inch (50 mm) in length. Their legs are reddish.
The larvae are white legless with a large prothorax typical of Cerambycidae beetle larvae. Eggs are laid in the fall and over winter under shallow bark. Early springs causes the larvae to begin boring to the heart wood and down the branches. The larvae damage locust trees by weakening the branches of the tree with numerous large galleries that either weakens the tree so that it cracks or breaks off or cuts of nutrient and water supply to new growth. Pathogens can enter cracked trees and infect the xylem/phloem layers. Feeding is through the summer with pupation in August and flying adults emerging ca. September. The adults are very active fliers and often visit Goldenrod flowers although they do not have to feed as adults.
This time for a change I shot without flash. There was plenty of sunshine and I can see a lot of macros being shot with available light only. But I'm not sure whether the result wouldn't have been better with at least some fill-in flash (notice the slight shadow on the right of the image). The original picture was somewhat sharpened and noise (ISO400) removed in Neat Image. Aperture priority mode, +2/3EV exposure compensation.

HI Mark,
Too bad that such a pretty little bug can cause so much damage through its larvae. The details on the beetle are well exposed and sharp, and the colors and designs are very interesting. Great POV as well.

Hallo Mark,
a nice close-up of this Cerambycide beetle. Depth of field is pretty good so that details of the elytra, legs and antennae are clearly visible. The shadow on the right side is a little bit disturbing but probably not to avoid.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Mark,
I like much this catch. Contrary to often, it is on the color black of the insect that one depression directly, whereas in general, it is on the colors vivies.
Well done, Arnaud.

Bonjour Mark,
j'aime beaucoup cette prise. Contrairement à souvent, c'est sur la couleur noir de l'insecte que l'on flache directement, alors qu'en général, c'est sur les couleurs vivies.
Bien fait, Arnaud.

Hi Mark

This is an excellent shot o fthis lovely looking beetle!
Its colors and its textures (especially on its thorax) look really great, the long articulated antena are excellent and the contrast with the beautiful flower it is on is very nice, too.
I like the POV, the DOF, the very good sharpness and the framing. The only nit in this shot is the shadow from the flash from the right side of the image...but no big deal :)

Anyway, Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Mark,
Wonderfull and brillant macro of this insect. Lightning and exposure are just perfect. I like this composition and details as well as this very good DOF. It is nice to see a shadow zone at the right that add to the composition by isolating the subject. Well done!

I like your picture very much. Yellow tones of its colour palette are very nice. BG is clean, transparent and impressive. The reflection of flower details is perfect. Sharp-ness and details of the beetle is outstanding also as well as POV and DOF. The light shadow in the right corner of the shot is beautiful. Great job and TFS.
