I was at Natural Bridge, Virginia waiting for the night show to begin and this fellow decided to swoop down and allow me a full five minutes of shooting from about 20 feet away.

Originally shot in RAW, extracted a jpg using RawShooter Essentials, used photoshop CS to convert to lab and increase color, ajusted levels and slight curves before resizing.

Hi Jeff,
you start with a nice picture.
The POV and composition are very nice.
Maybe it's a bit soft nut still a nice picture.
Well done.

Welcome to TN
A Happy New Year.

And what a nice entrance you have made!!!

Do try to research your subject "bird" and enter information abt it. For instance, click on: Grand Héron / Great Blue Heron

Looking forward to more photos soon!

PS The photo could use a wee sharpening, which I have attempted in a workshop < but can't post... >

Hi Jeff,
Welcome to TN!
You make an excellent start with this shot of the Great Blue Heron in a fine setting. Though this shot is not the sharpest, it is a good capture with the heron in an interesting pose.
Well done and I look forward to seeing more shots from you.
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

Hi Jeff and welcome to Treknature!
I see that you have used a 150 mm lens so this Heron must have been really close to you. You have captured it beautifully against the moving water!

Have you done any afterwork in the computer? Please, let us know how you work with your photos... so that we can learn from each others.

Best regards / Bengt

Ricardo

Welcome to TN Jeff... a beautiful image for your first presentation, with pleasant point of view, soft colors with appropriate control light and good election of the vertical framing.
I coincide with Ellis49 about the focus something soft, but it is only a detail inside the composition.
An excellent post... I hope to continue seeing your new post as well as your active participation saying and criticizing images of other members.
My best wishes for 2007... Ricardo

Hello Jeff, and welcome to TN !
This is a beauiful picture to start with ! I like the pose of the bird, he loksproud and attentive. Beautiful natural colors, excellent composition and POV. I have lots of these birds on the pond near my home, but I was never to get this close or to take any picture, congratulations !

Hi Jeff

A warm welcome to TN. I hope you have a wonderful stay and may we still see much more lovely postings from you portfolio.

Your first post is a fine shot and although it normally takes a couple of postings to get it all sorted out this one has done pretty fine. The vertical composition was a good choice to accommodate this lengthy bird. The colours seem very natural. Although you did not use a telephoto lens (which could be sensitive to movement) it seems like you picked up a little movement therefore the slightly soft focus. At 1/250 shutter speed with a 150mm Canon lens my opinion is that the subject should have been somewhat sharper. The ISO 800 selection and the late afternoon light (which apparently was in rather short supply and behind the bird) probably added your predicament. The moving white water and the softness of the background (BG) enhanced the bird.

Well done with your first post and TFS.
