Red River Hog
Potamochoerus porcus

Range: Africa, south of the Sahara to northern South Africa
Habitat: Forests, wooded savannahs
Conservation Status: Common

This wild pig really likes the night life! The red river hog is most active at night, and one important activity is searching for food. The hog uses its snout like a plow to dig up roots, but this pig isn’t picky: it also eats fruits, grasses, insects, reptiles, etc. After a night of feeding and traveling, the animal rests during the day in burrows it digs in well-forested areas.

Red river hogs live in family groups, each led by a dominant male and usually having four to six members. A male and female pair mate for life, and the male plays an active role in caring for and defending the young.
Despite their short legs, red river hogs are fast runners and good swimmers!

This photo was taken at the San Diego Zoo.

Hello Manyee,
This Potamochoerus porcus is strange for me, I never see before !
The "+++" : subject, sharpness, DOF, exposure, warm colors, note...
The "-" : the similar tones of BG don't isolate the animal...
Bravo mon Amie et merci pour le partage.

Hello Manyee,
I saw this animal in the Wuppertaler Zoo. This is great portrait shot. Great exposure, wonderful warm colours, excellent sharpness and very good POV. This is a great composition.
Happy New Year my dear.

Shucks I already fancied being in Africa!

Great shot and compo. I especially like the shadow of the hair on the ear that is shown!

Also very nicely done in this shot is that the setting is so natural, and lacking ANY sign of the zoo-setting.

And a Festive FESTIVUS and Happy New Year to *YOU* from Nova Scotia...

Hi Manyee,
A good portrait shot on this Red River Hog. Nice quality light and a spot on exposure have the colors and detail looking excellent. We have them at the St. Louis Zoo, but I have not gotten a high quality of one like this. Well done!
Happy New Year to you and your family,
Scott

HI Manyee,

The light here is certainly a plus...

Very distinctive markings/colors, only seen this way up close, in a well done profle portrait.. You actually make this guy look handsome ;)

Hi ManYee

I hid this one away so that Dame von Warzenschwein would not see it, otherwise she would have wanted to send some message to her relatives from 'Red River'. So I'm quickly sneaking this writing in before she discovers what I'm busy doing.

Suffice to say it is a great photo of a very handsome hog and at least he resides in the safety of a zoo where he is not exposed to the dangers of any possible roadkill scenario.

Keep well and take care
Regards
Loot

PS. I couldn't believe it...I really was so careful and took every precaution not to wake Dame von Warzenschwein while I quickly sneaked in this critique, but the unthinkable have just happened and she caught me red handed and red faced, looking like a red turkey.

Now she’s all red-eyed and upstairs like a red terror and won’t even speak to me. Eish, woman! Maybe that’s a blessing in disguise though, but before she took off she snorted something about never forgiving me for not showing her this fantastic photo of her red-headed cousin. She said this red-blooded guy really makes her red heart bubble and boil as he wakes the wild animal inside of her. She miss him so much that it causes a red-hot burning inside of her almost like when she had some red chilly peppers in the blistering sun. No comment from my side though. Seems like this has turned into a red herring for me and I will have to cover a lot of red-tape whilst appearing on the red-carpet.

I'll just give her some red wine to calm her down and play her favourite CD by 'Red' and hope the red tide will eventually subside.
