New South Wales Christmas Bush.(Ceratopetalum Gummiferum) This is a glorious Australian native tree. it has masses of creamy-white Spring flowers with bracts becoming larger and brilliant red by Christmas. Small serrated leaves are bronze pink when young.
This photo shows an example of the flowers and bracts early in the season. I will upload other photos which show the flowers after a few weeks.
This particular tree has started turning a pinkish colour on October 1st every year for the last 18 years. You can almost set the date by it it has been so regular. By Christmas the tree is a mass of deep red flowers. That is if the pink and grey galahas don't strip it bare. I counted 28 birds in it one afternoon. By the end of the day there was a huge amount of stipped flowers on the ground and the bush was looking a little worse for wear. The birds break off the flowers and hold them in a claw. They then nip out the crunchy seeds and drop the leaves and flowers!
Have to add that this year unfortunately for the first time in 18 years this tree will have no flowers. We have had an extrememly dry year and obviously the Christmas Bush has suffered. It formed flowers as normal but these have unfortunately all dried up and are now falling off without having ever even opened past bud stage. There are a very few scattered flowers on it and they are trying hard to open and stay. We have had dry years before but this must be the first time it has been dry at the critical bud forming stage. I will really miss not having this brilliant diplay visible out my windows this year. |

L'image manque un tout petit peu de netteté mais le sujet est relativement bien valorisé par l'appréciation de la finesse des détails et de la délicatesse des couleurs.
