When Europeans first started settling eastern Australia in1788, the Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lopotes) was a bird of the lightly timbered inland. Indeed, during his expedition to the Liverpool plains in 1839, the great English ornithologist, John Gould wrote that it was a pity this attractive pigeon will never “become an object of general observation”. As the country became settled, more and more forested land was cleared for farming and this provided new territory for the seed-eating pigeon to expand eastward towards the coast. Today it is fairly common on the coast, inhabiting rural areas, parklands and even urban gardens.
We found this one in a park near Port Stephens, around 120km north of Sydney. It was one of a pair resting in a Norfolk Island Pine. Slightly cropped and resized for TN.

I've never saw this one before. Nice punk :-) I like composition of your picture with blue sky, green plant and Pigeon.

I'm surprised the Pommie pigeons didn't develop these mohawks first. Trafalgar squares always full of punks.
Certainly a very striking bird....
....now,tell the truth...how long did it take you to catch this pigeon and put hair gel on for the pic? ;)

Never seen that one before. What a face, funny eye and crest! It's a stunning shot you post here, Chris, and besides the originality of this pigeon, it's also very well in situation with the blue and green environment.

Excellent picture! Superb colors and great details. I love the pigeons hairdo! Wonderful.

Amazing bird Chris. I have certainly not seen it before. And reading through the others comment neither have they. Nice write up too. Well done.

Very good catch and very clear picture, in thumbnail it is indeed looked like a pigeon.

Chris, Great looking bird, never seen this "flavor" before..(no I don't eat them!) ;-)) Good sharpness & detail & the blue sky & green fronds make it bright & appealing. Well done!

Great shot Chris, a new species to me.
Lovely pose and detail, which was hard as the sun was creating shadows, you pulled it off though.
Beautiful sky.
Good note.

Great shot Chris, I've never seen a pigeon like this before - a very good looking bird it is too. The composition and colours are very nice altough cloning out the branch in the top right would be a temptation. Good work.

Fantastic looking bird Chris beautiful markings and coloring throughout. Very well captured but I would clone out top right branch...well done.
