I managed to get a few photos of this beauty whilst it was preening itself. It is a White-faced Heron. I took it in a local park in Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills.

Ardea novaehollandiae (White-faced Heron)

This slim bluish-grey heron has a white face, chin and upper throat, and a black bill and greenish-yellow legs. Strap-shaped plumes are long and pale grey on the back and short and pinkish brown on the chest. The call is a guttural croak.

Habitat
Any sort of waterway, creek, dams or wetlands throughout the east coast of Australia.

Diet
White-Faced Herons are generalists when it comes to feeding. They forage over inter-tidal mud flats and rock pools, swamps, wet pasture and even residential lawns. Their prey is varied, mostly crustaceans, squid, fish, insects, amphibians, spiders, snails and worms.

Breeding
The White-Faced Heron breeds most of the year, depending on food supplies. Their nest is a loose platform of sticks up to 20 metres above the ground in a tree not necessarily near water. Both adults incubate for about 26 days and usually 2 chicks are raised and fed by both parents.

PP work:
Cropped image from the original
Altered the contrast and brightness levels
Sharpened the image

Hope you like it! Thanks for looking and for your comments and critiques. Cheers Tina :-)

I really like the composition of your heron photo. Excellent details and sharpness. I do think that it is a little over-exposed (mainly the white around his eye).

Hi Tina, nice to see you here at TN! Nice shot of the Heron here, this Heron seems a lot prettier than out European Grey. I like the POV showing both his front and his profile with that long beak. Good light and great colours, nice and sharp!

Hi Tina - so nice for me to see birds like this in a natural habitat - most of my animal shots are taken in zoos or birdparks...I do envy you!

A nice pose and composition with the bird amongst the reeds like this...good shot!

Hi Tina,
Beautiful shot of this lovely Heron preening itself. I really like the pose it has. Nice.
Cheers,
Debbie

Hi Tina,
herons are excellent birds to photo as they are large enough to easily spot from a distance and then try to sneak up on.I say you have done well to get as close as you have in this photo so as a result you have very good details in this shot.Nice not as well.Tfs Bob

Hello Tina:)
Pretty nice shot of the heron Tina. Good details on the bird. I like the colors and compo alot. The long reeds along the waters edge, and also the ones in the fg give the photo a nice feel and look. Good shooting Tina!!

Hi Tina,
A very good shot of heron. It does look quite different from ours.A good composition.
TFS, Smitha.

I never seen any of these before. Nice shot. Maybe step down your exposure a few nothes so the white areas won't be overexposed.
