As my 50D is being repaired here is another one from my archives from our trip to Australia more than 5 years ago.

Golden Christmas Beetle. (Anoplognathus porosus)

Belongs to the family Scarabidae that is related to the European Flower beetles. There are 35 species of this genus in Australia, some of which are called Christmas Beetles as they are most plentiful around December.
Their colourful iridescence also makes them look like decorations.

This one closely resembles the White Christmas beetle (A. pallidicollis) but it has more porous-looking wing cases and is a little more colourful. Both species, like this one, are about 2.5 cm long.

Christmas Beetles are destructive, many of them eating Eucalyptus leaves, as shown here. This beetle and leaf had dropped on to a picnic table shaded by a eucalyptus tree.
The droppings and eaten parts of the leaf can be seen on the wood of the table. The damage they cause can be extensive, often killing the tree.

Their larvae eat roots of various plants that include grasses.

This image was taken with my old compact camera hand-held. It was moderately cropped and after size reduction it was sharpened a little.

Bonjour Ivan,
Interesting posting! Such a beautiful creature..which makes such damages! Sometimes I think that Eucalyptus trees are not the best trees either.

What this does...is shows many that great images can come from less expensive cameras...and while I do have Leica, it is great mostly for landscapes. It does them and photos such as this as no other can. Now as a backup, I am using a cross platform camera. The Lumix LX35. I am finding it has the capabilities of imaging such as this, and with its superb motion sensing...well also at 400mm 35 equil. Fine archival Ivan.

Good evening friend Ivan,
Lovely shiny creature with fine colors, sharpness and detail. The depth of field looks quite pleasant as well. In my opinion the image can be just slightly corrected by decreasing the brightness or rather increasing the contrast, but that is just a suggestion. Thanks for sharing and I hope to see more images from you with the repaired 50D, soon!
Regards,
George Veltchev
