[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a female Blue Skimmer(Orthetrum caledonicium).
I found it in open woodland at the base of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. The closest water would have been over a kilometre away and at the bottom of a 50m gorge. It was quite active and defiantly chasing prey along the forest track.

An interesting feature is that the forearms are trucked up behind the eyes. Nigel (Merlin) has commented on my previous postings of Australian dragonflies that this appears to be a feature of dragonflies here. I know from my observations that they certainly use them to handle prey, then tuck them away after feeding. I’ve shot eight species now from several different genera and they seem to do this.

Thanks for looking.

Excellent photo of an Odonata!
Perfect DOF, details, colours and sharpness!
It's an Anisoptera suborder. May be some kind of Gomphus, but I don't know more.
Very good BG!
5* and TFS!

Hi Chris, this dragonfly is very, very nice. I like composition, colour and detail.

Hi Chris!
Very good macro shot. I like POV and pose - dragonflies are masters of interesting poses ;-) Balck/yellow body looks very good, wings are sharp from tip to tip, DOF is good. I know nothing about Australian d-fly, so sorry, I can't help with ID!

Hi Cris, Great shot, Every thing in the photo seem to right on, TFS Kyle

Superb POV, DOF, sharpness and colours, Chris.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Chris
I think this one is the Common Percher Diplacodes bipunctata - a female. I assume there's some PP work on the background?
Regards, Nigel
