Red vented Bulbul

I took this photo when we were in Fiji 2 1/2 years ago, and I have only just found out what it is called.

It is the Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds.

It originally bred in tropical southern Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to Myanmar and southwestern China, and has been introduced to Fiji and Hawaii. It is also common in urban parts of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

This is a bird of scrub, open forest, plains and cultivated lands. It builds its nest in a bush; two or three eggs is a typical clutch.

Red-vented Bulbul is about 20cm in length, with a long tail. It has brown or black upperparts, with a white rump. The breast is brown or black, and the rest of the underparts are white apart from the red around the vent. The head and small crest are black.

Sexes are similar in plumage, but young birds are duller than adults. The flight is bouncing and woodpecker-like.

There are a number of regional variations in plumage, mainly with respect to the upperpart and breast colour. Red-vented Bulbuls feed on fruit, nectar and insects.

The Red-vented Bulbul is incapable of synthesizing vitamin C. It shares this features with a very limited number of other animals, among which are certain fruit bats and primates (including humans) as well as the guinea pig.

Hello Janice,
Wonderful capture of this pretty Bulbul which I know from India. Great focus and lovely sharp details and colours. I would have preferred a more natural environment to this perfect shot but I like the colours.
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hello Janice,
This is a superb capture of a Red-vented Bulbul taken from a fine POV with excellent sharpness to show its features very well.
I would imagine this species has been introduced to the Fiji Islands that have a fairly high Indian section of the population (must include some birds too!).
This is a joy to see and thanks for sharing it,
Ivan

What a cute bird this is Janice! I love its dark crest and little touch of red on its tail. You captured a beautiful pose with good exposure and details. I like this composition and lovely catch-light. You chose good DOF that let us see great details and beautiful blurred background. Well done!

Hallo Janice
Beautiful capture of this Red vented Bulbul. Your note is superb and very narrative! Such notes add more value to a very good picture and a good picture this is indeed. The colours and the composition are superb. I like the water droplets on the bird's beak. A lovely portrait, presented in a splendid manner. Just love the colours of the plumage. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
