Kuripaka, Wheki-Ponga )(Maori)
Jade Green Tree Fern
Family: Dicksoniaceae
Genus: Dicksonia fibrosa

This is MY FAVOURITE of all the Tree ferns growing in New Zealand. It is Dicksonia Fibrosa, Kuripaka, Wheki-Ponga, or Jade Green Tree Fern.

It is NOT the Silver fern, NZ’s most well-known fern.

This tree fern is a slow growing, very hardy tree fern which will reach up to 6m in height (although over many decades!). It has a very thick, fibrous trunk and produces a beautiful crown of fronds in a shuttlecock shape.

I love the feel of the fronds, and this how I recognise this fern. The Silver Fern is known by it’s silver, or white colour on the underside of the fronds. But the fronds of this Wheki-Ponga feel very crisp to touch. They grow 1 – 2m in length and form a very symmetrical appearance. Old fronds can form a “skirt” around the trunk, which protects the crown. I will place a WS to show you the trunk.

To me this tree fern is very beautiful. Artistically it isn’t s good photo, but I wanted to show you these three stages of frond growth:
The newly opening Koru
The paler Koru that has now opened into a pale brownish frond
And then the open green fronds.

So enjoy this.

Have a good weekend. Auckland, NZ, turned a bit colder over the last 24 hours, but still sunny. . .

Hi Janice,
Hope your all keeping well down under. Shame it's turning a little cooler for you, today was the warmest day of the year so far for us in the UK, I think it might have just touched 20.
Thanks for showing us this shot, which is really well composed, allowing us to see the three stages of growth. Keep up the good work,
Good luck,

Hello Janice, amazing close up; sharpness, colors, light, composition, everything is excellent ! TFS.

Hello Janice,
Great composition of the pastoral and fern leaves. The only thing I would remove is this blurred leaf in lower right corner.
Best greetings,

Whenever I see a fern in the forest I think of you Janice. This shot is so lovely, the twirled leaf is very interesting. I think I'd crop the bottom a bit more. One of these days I'm going to give a fern photo a try, although I'm sure it won't be as nice as yours! Well done.

Hello Janice.
I have been enjoying some of your shots I missed, very nice ones in your gallery.
At last I got attracted with this fern, you know I like them as much as you do :)
"Artistically it isn’t s good photo": I disagree with you, I find it an artistic and interesting composition with a great note as usual.
Well done and my best regards, Felipe.
