Exotic Bird

Himalayan Monal Pheasant

Thanks Pam / Coasties for telling me the name of this beauty.

The Himalayan Monal is the national bird of Nepal.

Other Names: Impeyan Pheasant, Impeyan Monal
Range: The Himalayas, from eastern Afghanistan to western China
Habitat: Mountainous regions; in summer, they are found in rocky, grass covered meadows and winters in coniferous and mixed forests.

As their name suggests, these birds come from the Himalayas, from Eastern Afghanistan continuously through Pakistan India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. They live at an altitude of 8,000 to 15,000 feet and are probably found, in summer, at a higher altitude than any other pheasant species. They are very hardy.

Notes found at:

I photographed it through the wire mesh, and was quite pleased with how it came out, hardly showing any mesh at all.

It was in a small exotic bird aviary at Twin Lakes in Coatesville. There was a very extensive range of exotic birds both caged and free flying, from ostriches to macaws, ostriches to water fowls.

Hi Janice!
I know this dandy from our Zoo :-) Very proud and self-confident :-) Great shot my friend, especially in these hard conditions. Colours and pose are nice, I like also blurred feathers on its head.

Hi Janice,
Really nice colors seen in this beautiful bird..Good sharp detail at the head, great framing and POV..I've experienced the same once at a tiger exhibit. The 3 inch spaced vertical slats were not visible in the photo at all..PT
Well done mf and TFS!

Hello Janice!
It looks great! No doubt, very beautiful bird and very good capture. Pity that the BG isn't very interesting, but I guess the bird is so colourful that it compensates the grey colours of BG.

Hi Janice,
It is a pleasure to see this muti-colored bird. Perfectly presented in every aspects. TFS

Hi Janice!
Pam's image and note, thankfully, led me to your image of this exotic Himalayan bird I grew up with in my younger days in a sub-Himalayan valley in India.
Your note says it all and Pam too has added a few points about this bird. I feel happy to know it is well protected now and multiplying.
Needless to say, this is a beautiful image of the bird you have posted here.

Hi Janice, The colours on you pheasant turn out wonderful, and the detail in the feathers is so vivid. A really nice photo. Janice...from the other end of the planet :)

Beautiful capture of this gorgeaous Monal pheasant, the iridescense color ranges show up very nicely, and the detail is incredible. Well done Janice. :)
