The Golden Pheasant
(Chrysolophus pictus)

The Golden Pheasant
is one of the most popular of all pheasant species kept in captivity. It is very beautiful, hardy, easy to keep and great for beginners. The Golden has been kept in captivity since as early as 1740. For being so well known and familiar in captivity, very little is known of their habits in the wild, in the mountains of central China.

This species, along with the Lady Amherst Pheasant (Chrysolophus amherstiae), make up the group of pheasants called the Ruffed Pheasants, genus Chrysolophus. They are named for their cape or ruff, which they spread around their face and neck during courtship.

Since these two species are so closely related, many breeders have crossed them, making "pure" Goldens and Amhersts hard to find in captivity.

I photographed it through the wire mesh, and was quite pleased with how it came out, hardly showing any mesh at all.

It was in a small exotic bird aviary at Twin Lakes in Coatesville, where I visited a few weeks back. There was a very extensive range of exotic birds both caged and free flying, from ostriches to macaws, ostriches to water fowls.

The plumage is great in all colours and pattern. Well composed, good POV and details.
Well done, my friend.

How is it "Down under" any winter yet ;-)

I personally think the top of his head is a tad over exposed , but love teh rich colours of his plumage, DOF is spot on too :)

Hi Janice,
Great shot of this Pheasant, a great looking bird. The feathers on the back of his neck remind me of one of those Egyptian headresses that the Pharoahs used to wear :-) Excellent colours, nice detail and good job avoiding that wire. Nice work!

Hi Janice
What a great looking bird. Surely it must be one of the best looking pheasants and we know it is a highly colourful group of birds. That beady white eye with the yellow teardrop & the pin sized highlight, the golden taupe, the colourful neck and back feathers, the red breast, and the perky little beak makes this a sight for sore eyes.
You have captured it very well with a great composition. The details are impressive and the lighting is remarkable.
Very well done and TFS.

Hello Janice,
Another superb specimen of your numerous feathered friends! And as usual you do justice to their great looks... Good portrait, he can for sure use it for his passport!
Some years ago I lived in a place where wild pheasants came to visit in my garden... one guy with a lot of ladies following, very funny to look at them!

Hi janet
Just had to pop in to say Hi. Trust all is well in Down Under. Beautiful Pheasant, your work has improved so much
Take care

Hello Janice

The word..Wow...is what first comes to mind when I opened this beautifully colourful photo.
The more I look at it the more I see.
The detail on this bird is fantastic.
The fishscale - like blue coloured pattern on its back is so unusual on a bird.
Thanks for sharing.
Please say hello to Pam (Coasties) from me when you next see her.
