Parthenos sylvia philippenis – The Brown Clipper
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Country: Malaysia and the Philippines

This is a Brown Clipper Butterfly. I have posted a few photos of this popular butterfly, and you can see them here and here.

I saw this Brown Clipper at Butterfly Creek, Auckland's only butterfly house.

These butterflies come in many colour variations. They can be brown, bluish, green, yellow or orange. Those from the Philippines are brown and cream in colouration. In comparison, the butterflies from Malaysia are a bright blue or green colour. The size between the wing tips are 6-8 cm.

This one is brown and cream, they only have this colour at Butterfly Creek. No matter what colour they are, they are still considered the same species, though the species from Malaysia is called a subspecies: Parthenos Sylvia lilacinus.

The Clipper butterfly has a rapid gliding flight and usually settles with it wings opened. You don't often see it with its wings raised like this. It took me a while to work out what it was at first. It is very approachable and is one of the easiest butterflies to photograph in butterfly parks.

Usually they dwell in forests, where they fly under the crowns of trees. Sometime the butterflies gather in great amounts on damp riverside sand. Their flight is strong, they can glide long distances with characteristically spread wings – forward and down.

They warm themselves in sunlight sitting on branches at the height of 3-10 meters above the earth.

Hi Janiace,
very beautiful butterfly and well captured too. great details and colors with a nice background. your notes are interesting too. tfs.

The aesthetics come through quite strongly in this well-composed shot, Janice.
The arrangement of long blades of grass including the one on top of the butterfly adds great beauty to this picture.
The subject, of course, is captured very well from an effective point of view, giving fine details on its nether wings.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Janice!

Fantastic shape of this butterfly. Its wing looks like big sail on boat! Great capture.

By the way - our olympic team won four medals yesterday, including 1G and 2S!

Hi Janice!

Congratulations for this outstanding picture! It's one of the best butterfly pictures of the last days, at least. The perspective and the depth of view are great, and the composition with the leaves is superb!

A real pleasure to look at...

Kind regards

Hi Janice,
You have made excellent macro work on this Brown Clipper Butterfly resulting with nice POV and composition, pin-sharp details and nicely blurred BG.

beautiful and bright pic, TFS Ori

Hi Janice,

Nice composition and full frame photo showing good detail. Interesting note as well. With so many variations in colour

This is very good, although I think I would try to burn in the hind wing and body a little bit. Gary

Hi Janice,
This is a very impressive shot. I am really amazed by the wonderful light in this photo. It gave the entire photo a real fresh feeling. The DOF and the composition are both wonderful. But I do have to mention that the photo could be a bit sharper.

Kia Ora Janice,
Perfect shot with compliment on this Clipper!
great pose of it in total sharpness, wonderful colour and details
Thinking of paying a visit to the Greek with my wife, do you have the address!
take care and sincere regards to you and Dave!

Hi Janice,

This is excellent macro work, although I see that you did not use a macro lens. Good pose, composition and BG. Well done.

Hello Janice,

A wonderful shot of this Clipper. When I saw this picture for the first time, I think it was a bit over-exposered. But aftee a while I think NO. All the details are perfect. It looks like a painting. So warm and beautiful. I realize again that Mother Nature is so beautiful.

Interesting notes and thanks for sharing. TFS BOB

Hello Janice,
Nicely done. You nailed this Clipper very well. And it is definitely not a Nail Clipper but a Brown Clipper:-).

Beautiful b-fly Janice,
Excellent POV and well focused at the head where it must be.
Nice color, overall comp, and a well controlled exposure also.
Well done,

Hello janice, Very nice shot and superb macro shot. Close view and excellent sharpness. Lovely composition.Ganesh

Well done and majestic looking photo of a beautiful butterfly.

Nice detail in the shadows and highlights. The photo emphasizes wind motion to me with the way the butterfly is resting (nicely postioned by the way) and the leaves add to the effect. Contrast is well done.

I may have to check out our local butterfly houses near me. :)

Hi Janice.
