Parthenos sylvia philippenis – The Brown Clipper
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Country: Malaysia and the Philippines

This is the Brown Clipper I saw at Butterfly Creek. These butterflies come in many colour variations. They can be brown, bluish, green, yellow or orange. Those from the Philippines are brown and cream in coloration. In comparison, the butterflies from Malaysia are a bright blue or green colour. Size between the wing tips are 6-8 cm.

This one is brown and cream. No matter what colour they are, they are still considered the same species, though the species from Malaysia is called a subspecies; Parthenos Sylvia lilacinus. The larvae of this butterfly feed on two different plants in the family Passifloraceae, Modecca sp. and Adenia palmata. The translucent white forewing patches and dark markings are characteristic. It also has a distinctive black and orange striped abdomen.

This magnificent butterfly has a rapid gliding flight and usually settles with it wings opened. It is very approachable and is one of the easiest butterflies to photograph in Butterfly Parks.

Usually they dwell in forests, where they fly under the crowns of trees. Sometime the butterflies gather in great amounts on damp riverside sand. Their flight is strong, they can glide long distances with characteristically spread wings – forward and down. They warm themselves in sunlight sitting on branches at the height of 3-10 meters above the earth.

Magnifique, Janice. Excellent focus en Macro, pose non habituelle d'un tel insecte. Vous avez su saisir l'insecte en photo juste au bon moment.
Belle composition et présentation. Merci.

Hi Janice
Great stuff. An excellent POV in this nicely framed composition that did not waste any unnecessary space. Great colours, nice sharp details, and an amazing BG. Theres a little noise there though. Maybe it was brought on by the cropping since the ISO was at 250 and should not be the cause for it. However, it is no big deal as it is easily fixed in PP. By the way, did the camera choose ISO 250 or can you actually select that with the 300D.
Well done with the exposure as the darkish butterfly sat on the light coloured surface that threatened to explode with light, but I think you did well to contain it.
Good work my friend and TFS.
God bless.

PS. How's your flu bug doing, are you over it?

Hello Janice,

I like your title and your composition! The crop is perfect in my opinion... The blurred bg enhanced very well the insect. Maybe the white is a little bit OE in the left but still a great picture!!!

Bonjour Janice,
j'aime bien votre photo, bien sûr la qualité technique est bonne mais la composition en largeur est originale grâce au point de vue et la pose à plat du papillon.
Well seen and well done my Friend.

Hi Janice!
Extraordinary, but very good POV. Details are great, pose and face also. Good idea with wide frame. I like this exotic beauty!

Did you saw Poland-Costarica? I hope you didn't :-) We won, but game was awful!

Hi Janice,
This one reminds me of the situation implied in your title!
Good point of view, with fine details in the butterfly...

Nicely captured Janice,
Good detail, colours and very sharp. exposure and lighting are good. Good POV and composition. Nicely framed.

Thanks for posting, enjoy the rest of the week.

Fantastic POV show this butterfly off well. I try to shoot subjects that are not sitting next to a challenge lighting situation, in your case the white frame that it is setting on, its very reflective and takes from the subjects attention. :)

Excelente POV Janice... realmente.
No es fácil capturar imágenes de mariposas en esta posición, sobre todo con tanta nitidez.
Un atinado DOF permite que el fondo no interfiera con la visión del insecto.
Gran presentación... sin dudas.
Saludos cordiales... Ricardo

Excellent POV Janice... really.
It is not easy to capture images of butterflies in this position, mainly with so much clarity.
An accurate DOF allows that the background doesn't interfere with the vision of the insect.
Great presentation... without doubts.
Cordial greetings... Ricardo
