What is a Butterfly

From: www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/butterflies/allabout/

Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. The three body parts are the head, thorax (the chest), and abdomen (the tail end).

The butterfly's body is covered by tiny sensory hairs. The four wings and the six legs of the butterfly are attached to the thorax. The thorax contains the muscles that make the legs and wings move.

Butterflies are very good fliers. They have two pairs of large wings covered with colourful, iridescent scales in overlapping rows.

Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are the only insects that have scaly wings. The wings are attached to the butterfly's thorax (mid-section). Veins support the delicate wings and nourish them with blood.

Butterflies can only fly if their body temperature is above 86 degrees. Butterflies sun themselves to warm up in cool weather. As butterflies age, the colour of the wings fades and the wings become ragged.

The speed varies among butterfly species (the poisonous varieties are slower than non-poisonous varieties). The fastest butterflies (some skippers) can fly at about 30 mile per hour or faster. Slow flying butterflies fly about 5 mph.

My Canon camera is still in the Canon Hospital, so I am going through my archives!!

I’m not sure what this butterfly is, but I do know it looks very ragged and tired. . .

Hi Janice,
I don't know why (don't know much about butterflies) but he looks old and tired in fact :) This is a good composition with great colors. My only nit is that there is noise, did you processed it a lot? It's is to bad that your camera is at hospital... I will know today if I have to do the same thing with mine... I'm going out tomorrow for a fews days vacantions and I'm a bit stressed about what's going to happen to my camera :( Have a great weekend!

Hi Janice,
Great shot. Sharp and clear. Nice details. Nice blurry BG. Excellent close up picture.

Ciao Janice,
non ho mai visto questa specie di farfalle, la foto è molto bella, ottimi i colori, brava!

Wow Janice! Beautiful shot of this butterfly! Great POV and your DOF is excellent. Good work!

Hi Janice,
Nice shot. Although this one has been around the block a few times, it's black & red colors remain striking..
It almost looks like you've caught a bit of light shining through the red parts?
I hope your Canon gets well soon :)
Well done and TFS!

Hi Janice
Everyone posts the "beauty queen" butterflys. I think its nice that you honor this old lady (or fella). Sebine is right, the blue BG brings the butterly colors forward.

Hi Janice,
Perfect title to describe me tonight!!!! except the butterfly bit!!
Just time for a quick visit.
Nice capture. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Hi Janice,

The foto looks a little bit grainy on my monitor, but the colors are absolutely beautiful. POV and composition are great too. I am sorry but I can't help you ID it. :) Well done & TFS!

Ps-I hope you will get your Canon back soon again! What was wrong with it?

Hi Janice,
You have captured him perfectly. He does look like he is well past his prime. Beautiful colors and sharp detail.

Hi Janice

This is a Scarlet Mormon. It does look awfully tatty. What a shame. Good shot. Nice work. :-)
