Red-billed gulls
Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus
Maori Tarapunga (Ta-rar-pung-ah)

These native New Zealand Red-billed gulls are all lined up on the rail taking part in a who can clean itself the fastest. And the winner is: The gull on the right!!

They dont just live by the sea, these seagulls live at Lake Rotorua, a fresh water lake at least 60kms from the coast.

Gulls live in flocks, so they have to get along with each other. Its a bit like children at school. Gulls squabble but they dont really hurt each other, and they warn each other about danger but you often see them letting others know whos the boss!

Gulls can most often be seen at the beach, where they eat small marine creatures (hoppers, crabs and shellfish), but they also spend time at the dump because they are good at scavenging food scraps that people throw away.

Grown up red-billed gulls have red beaks and red legs.

Most of these are young immature red-billed gulls - they have dark brown to brownish-red bills, purplish brown legs and feet, and attractive brown spots on their back and wing spots.

Good Morning Janice,
I like the repeating pattern of feathers in your composition ;-}}
Great exposure, detail, DOF, color, title, and POV of all that preening action...Hey, at least one of them's keeping a look-out :)
Well done!
Howard

Hi Janice!

And the winner is... let me see... what a fight! ladies and gentlemen! yes! second bird from right! it isn't ordinary bird! it is Houdini of washing birds! Congratulations! Now show us how you escape from our pan! And yes, you'll be chain up! [chain up? I don't know if this phrase exist in English :-)]

By the way! I didn't know that you like Terry Pratchett Janice - he's great!

Hi Janice,

A very nice photo. The right bird (winner) has a smile on his face (-: A very nice composition. Naturel colours. Interesting info. POV, DOF and BG are ok. I think that the photo will be better if you cropped a bit at the right-hand side. Regards and TFS Bob

perfect sharpness too.

Hi Janice,
We have Laughing Gulls in Galveston. I call them beach buzzards. Here also, you can find them far from the coast at inland lakes. Nice capture showing a different, at least for me, type of gull. The ones here are very loud and noisy. It is why they are called laughing gulls. Thanks for sharing.

Jim

Hi Janice,
This is really a nice one Janice, I meant to comment on this one earlier but missed this one,I have to say the sharpness and clarity on this is superb with no noise, I also like the way the rail the seagulls are plopped on directs itself from the right corner outward, showing excellent DOF. Simple is beautiful. :)
