Rotorua's Geothermal Uses

Rotorua is New Zealand's most popular geothermal area.

You just have to walk along the roads and see steam coming out of the ground. Many of the local Maori people even cook their meals in these boiling hot areas where they live.

We got off the beaten track when we found this place. This is only a couple of hundred metres away from Whakarewarewa Thermal reserve / Te Puia Rotorua’s best known thermal area. We decided to walk along the river there, and the steam kept covering the pathway.

Geothermal resources in the Rotorua area have been put to a number of practical uses.

The use of the geothermal resource in this region has a long history, well and truly pre-dating European settlement. The earliest uses were for bathing, washing and cooking, these being made possible by the existence of suitable natural features.

Today, geothermal is applied to a variety of domestic and commercial heating and other purposes. It is used for both the heat it can provide and the "mineral" water content of the fluid.

You have captured that perfectly Janice.
Been many years since I was up that way.
Great composition leading around the big pool on the left through the scene. Excellent detail.

Fascinating to see the amount of steam here -- which only begins to give an indication of the high temperature, I think!
Superb composition and details

Oh... This is such a special place Janice. I have the impression of being on another planet! Your country always amazed me with its many particularities... This is a very interesting capture of an unusual place from me. I like the texture created by this smoke (or steam) and this beautiful composition and interesting notes. You live in a very special country, let me tell you :) Well done and TFS,
Claudine

I don't know about you Janice, but I always feel a little nervous walking around these volcanic hot spots.
I always wonder how people can comfortably live there knowing whats underneath them.
Great shot.

Hi Janice

There is so much going on in this picture, if possibly too much steam! But it makes for a very interesting picture and you have shown the area well.

Very mysterious and at the same time a fantastic landscape shot Janice. This has the perfect exposure, not too dark and not too light. :)

This one has an excellent "steamy' atmosphere Janice ;)
Thanx for sharing this one, great note!

Janice I remember visiting stinky Rotorua! The first few hours I could not stand the smell there! By the fourth hour in the city I could not smell the oder anymore.

Great photo! It brings back pleasant memories!

Cheers!

NZ seems to have much in common with Iceland!! Lots of geothermal heating! I thought they only existed on south island, but I understand I have to go back and see more of your country than Auckland and the kiwibirds at zoo. Very good and sharp photo!
