Takiroa / Mount Sefton

Mount Sefton, 3151m, is an isolated 3000m peak towering high above the Mount Cook Village.

According to Maori legend, Takiroa is the guardian of Aoraki / Mt Cook.

A climb of Mount Sefton involves two open bivouacs at the snow line. Participants need to be exceptionally fit. Climbing days involve up to 14 hours climbing and up to 8 days.

While not technically very difficult, long distances need to be travelled with heavy packs over very steep and rough ground.

Mt Cook National Park is the major area for mountaineering in New Zealand and Australasia. It contains all but one of the summits of more than 3000 m (9842'), and over 40% of its area is glaciated.

Numerous ascents of all grades are possible, including ice faces, snow arêtes, rock buttresses, and more.

In 1913 the first ascent of Mt Sefton was made by Freda du Faur's climbing party. Emmeline Freda Du Faur (16 September 1882 - 11 September 1935) was the first female mountaineer to climb New Zealand's tallest mountain, Mount Cook, or Aōraki, as it is known in Maori.

a wonderful landscape showing the grasses now dried from a long summer and getting ready for "the change". Excellent notations to boot! superb image Janice and even better learning lessons in notes!

It doesn't seem a minute since I was there! Great shot - excellent composition - you can really see the glaciated 'U' shaped valley here (but then most of the NZ glacial features are very well formed).

This is another beautiful mountain scenery that goes straight into the heart of a mountaineer. I like the wide and open valley in its golden light, closed by a marvellous range of high mountains. Hiking there must be a pleasure...

Hi Janice

Another lovely landscape shot from your holiday with this one showing excellent detail of this mountain scene.

The composition once again shows all the evidence that proper thought has gone into the shot before pointing the camera and pressing the shutter release button. The rule of 1/3 were correctly executed and it worked well here with foreground (the grass plains), middle ground (the mountain range), and background (the beautiful blue sky) placed exactly in the right zones. Lovely DOF obtained from the versatile little Panasonic Lumix.

Another wonderful landscape from you.
The view here is really spectacular but also somehow relaxing. I'm sure it's just great to be able to walk through places with such a vista near them :)
The mountains in the BG are impressive and well exposed, while the composition is very nicely balanced by the elements in the FG.
A good DOF gives a great sense of perspective which completes this wonderful post.

What a beautiful mountain range.It reminds me a bit of Alberta.
The lighting is excellent with lovely natural colours.
Well focused,and composed the POV was well chosen.
