[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the same Penguin as I posted HERE.

As you may know from my earlier post this is a Yellow-eyed penguin (or Hoiho as the Maori people call it) and although it has a tag, it was 100% free & living in the wild. I photographed this animal in it's natural surrounding from a trench. Hoiho are an (alomost) endangered species and local parties do everything to protect them. They tag all birds, plant native trees, shrubs and plants so the birds can hide (hoiho walk a long way inland from the beach to nest) and kill predators such as wild cats and possums. In winter, when all penguins are at sea, they dig trenches through the population area and in summer you can walk through these trenches to see the wild birds up close & personal. Fantastic!

The Hoiho in the picture was what they called a "returner", he had been in the ocean all morning, fishing for his just born chicks. He is on it's way to the nest and at this moment he heard the 'bleep-bleep' sound of my camera (I turned it on). He stood still and carefully listened whether he really heard something. My gf and I kept quiet for a few seconds, maybe a minute, and the bird decided everything was safe and marched on. Phew!

Please read my earlier post for general information on Hoiho. These fantastic penguins (65-68 cms tall) are (almost) an endangered species of penguin.

Please feel free to criticize my picture and tell me your honest opinion; you don't have to be kind as I can really handle constructive criticism! :) I really appreciate everything you say (positive or negative) as I am here to learn something!

Ps-I know the white on his chest is overexposed!

So,you're lucky to visit NZ and to make a shot of Hoiho (I like Maori names)in the wild...DOF,pose,BG and notes are very good.You'd written about the chest!TFS

Good picture I like this bird. What I don't like is fence on BG and something on bird's wing.

Hi Pieter, dear little Hoiho. We went to see these little fellows in Dunedin too some years ago. What a trek they had to make back to their nests up the hill. I believe it is quite a touristy place to go now to see them.
I like your shot. Well done.

Hi Pieter, nice shot. It's a good pose with him looking over his shoulder at you. Perhaps a little soft in focus and I think would have beenn improved with a cleaner BG. Nevertheless, very nice work. Well done.

Great shot Pieter, pity about the human aspect (wooden fence and tag). The clarity is good though and the note is excellent.

Another nice Yellow-eye shot. What apity that you could only get the side with the band on the wing. Its a good shot and teh notes are good too.

Nice of you to add the extra photos to shows us the whole scene, Pieter. Its a nice shot and I think all the nits have been pointed out all ready. Well done.

I am curious... did you use some sort of burning or "lighting enhancer" around the eyes or is it it's natural look? I have seen the same in the previous post.

What strange eyes on this penguin, Pieter! This is a great capture and I'm glad your camera didn't scare him off. It seems a bit overly sharpened though (or maybe he just has really silvery feathers)!

Great shot. I'm jealous.

In terms of suggestions, a little shorter DoF might help focus our attention. Of course, it would be hard to go back and reshoot. But I think you can do it with some PP.
